Tamara was born on March 11, 1954 in Gusevo. She was invited to join Dynamo gymnastics club in 2nd grade by a coach who visited her class in the Belarussian city of Vitebsk. She went and immediately quit because she didn't find it interesting. The coach, however, was stubborn and convinced her to return. Soon, coach Vikenty Dmitriev and his pupil Larissa Petrik noticed Tamara. Her home life was unpleasant (her father was an alcoholic) so Tamara spent lots of time in the gym.
In 1968, at age 14, Tamara hoped to be a member of the Soviet Olympic Team. It didn't happen. But after winning the 1971 USSR Spartakiade and European Championships, the path to Munich was open. She won 4 medals in Munich and was awarded the Badge of Honor. A knee injury sustained during the Soviet gymnastics team's US tour in 1973 led to her retirement. She married a wrestler and gave birth to a daughter, Svetlana. She worked as a coach alongside Dmitriev briefly, but she was unable to hold a job due to her drinking. She died on November 1, 1992.
