Alena Drevjana (CSSR)

1984 Junior European B Silver Medalist

Alena was born on July 4, 1969 in Opava.  Her parents didn't do sports, but Alena was an active kid so her mother put her into gymnastics. Her talent was quickly noticed, and by age 10 she had moved into a sports boarding school in Ostrava. Four years later, she was selected for the national team and trained in Nymburk. Her coach was Libuse Mayerhoferova, who also coached Drahomira Smolikova.

Alena's gymnastics role model was Vera Caslavska. At the 1984 CSSR Championships, she scored a perfect 20 to win the beam title, and she was the captain of the gymnastics team at the 1988 Olympics. After her retirement in 1993, she worked as a coach.  Her son, Petr Coufal, and daughter, Jana Coufalova, are both competitive figure skaters who have represented the Czech Republic in international competitions. Another son plays soccer.
