Irene was born on February 12, 1953. She began gymnastics at SC Einheit Dresden. In 1968 she won silver on beam at the Druzhba competition, and the following year was sent to train in Berlin at SC Dynamo. After retiring from competitive gymnastics, she coached at SC Dynamo Berlin and at Preussen Berlin after reunification. Her daughter, Katja, was the 2000 German champion on vault and became the overall German champion in 2003.
