Alexander was born on July 7, 1947 and began gymnastics at the age of 15 (at the sports school of a tractor factory). Extremely talented, Maleev achieved the Candidate for Master of Sport ranking in one year. He was named to the USSR national team in 1969 and transferred to the Army Club in Minsk.
