Dmitri was born on July 19, 1973, in
Kaliningrad and began gymnastics at age 5. He trained at the Central Army
Sports Club in Moscow. In 1995, he met and married a French TV journalist,
Astrid, and divided his time between Russia and France. Karbanenko's
exclusion from Russia's 1996 Olympic team led him to seek French
citizenship. He competed for his new country at the 1997 World
Championships and just missed winning an all-around medal.
