Shayla was born on September 2, 1990. Her older sister, Jolene, was a gymnast and Shayla wanted to be just like her. She trained at Orlando Metro Gymnastics with coaches Jeff Wood and Christi Barineau. A top prospect for the 2008 Olympic team, Shayla broke her leg during the final training camp in Texas and traveled to Beijing as a spectator. Highly recruited by many colleges, she signed with the University of Georgia and joined the Bulldogs in 2009.
