Boriana was born on July 3, 1968, in Sofia.  She trained at CSKA Sofia under coach Margarit Krasteva.  She is the only  Bulgarian woman gymnast to win a world title (vault, 1983).  She retired after the 1988 Olympics and began coaching.  She got married in 1990 and had a son the following year.  Stoyanova is divorced and still lives in Sofia.
