Elena was born on May 23, 1969 in Leningrad (now St. Petersburg).  Her coach was Viktor Gavrichenkov; she trained at the Central Army Club.  Elena's idol was Natalia Kuchinskaya (winner of 3 gold medals at the 1966 World Championships and the 1968 Olympic beam champion).  

Married to an auto mechanic, Elena lived in St. Petersburg and has one son.  In 2004 she was inducted into the International Gymnastics Hall of Fame. She died on August 16, 2018 in St. Petersburg.
