Irina Pervushina (USSR)
1962 UB World Champion
Medal Total
World Championships: 2 Gold, 1 Silver, 1
Bronze
Irina was born April 1, 1942, and was coached by Yuri Shtukman in Voronezh. She was the alternate on the 1960 USSR Olympic team. After winning the uneven bars title at the Prague Worlds, she tore the meniscus in her knee. She sustained another injury almost as soon as she had recovered from the knee injury. When she finally got back to the gym, her coach seemed to have lost interest in her. She trained independently for a while, then left the sport for good at age 22 to concentrate on her studies (she was a student at the Chemistry Department of Voronezh University). She received her diploma as an analytical chemist at age 25 and worked at a research institute.
