Lavinia was born on October 21, 1976, in Lugoj and was coached by Octavian Belu at CSS Cetate Deva. After retiring from competitive gymnastics in 1996, she attended university and worked as a coach for beginning gymnasts in her old gym in Deva. In 1999, Lavinia married a policeman. She and two of her teammates (Corina Ungureanu and Claudia Presecan) filmed a nude gymnastics video in Japan in 2002 and were banned by the Romanian Gymnastics Federation from coaching and judging for five years.
