Maria was born in Evpatoria (Ukrainian SSR) in 1921. She studied at the Lesgaft Institute of Physical Culture in Leningrad and, upon graduation, she was assigned to Kharkov and joined the Stroitel society, training and coaching there. She was also a judge at domestic competitions throughout the USSR. Her daughter, Galina, was a gymnast and achieved a Master of Sports ranking.  Gorokhovskaya was the first Soviet female gymnast to win the Olympic all-around and was awarded the Order of the Red Star in 1957.
