Alina Goreac (ROM)

1973 European B Silver Medalist
1977 University Games AA Champion

Medal Total

European Championships:  1 Silver, 4 Bronze

Alina was born on September 28, 1952, in Lugoj, Romania. Her mother put her in ballet class when Alina was three, but her father (a football and motorcycle enthusiast) wanted her to do sports. A gymnastics coach at Alina's school, Tatiana Isar, spotted the girl during a PE class - and Alina made the move from ballet to gymnastics when she was six years old.

A natural gymnast and diligent worker, Alina progressed rapidly. In 1964 she finished in first place in the children's category at the Sports Schools Spartakiad, and in 1966 she won the beam title at the senior Romanian championships at the age of thirteen and a half. She transferred to the Dinamo club in Bucharest in 1970 and trained with coach Nicolae Covaci.

Chronic injuries (ankles, calves) began to plague her in 1972. She pushed through her injuries but was unable to earn a spot on the 1976 Olympic team for Montreal. After graduating from the IEFS (Institute of Physical Education and Sport) in Bucharest, she became a coach at the Steaua club in Bucharest. Alina's two younger brothers - Adrian and Corneliu - are also coaches.
