Gertrud (Trudi to her friends) was born on March 4, 1964 in Arad.  Of Hungarian and German descent, the Romanian authorities called her by her middle name, Emilia, so she would appear more Romanian.  She trained with Bela and Marta Karolyi in Onesti and later at CSS Cetate Deva.  

Trudi defected to Hungary in mid-1989 and worked as a coach.  There she met her future husband, Ferenc Kollar, and the two moved to the USA in 1991.  Their son, Roland, was born in 1999.  Today Trudi's a coach at Pozsar's Gymnastics Academy in California.
