Shaginyan was born in Gyulasarak (Armenian SSR) on July 30, 1923.  His strongest events were rings and pommel horse.  At a 1949 dual meet between the USSR and Hungary, Shaginyan received perfect scores of 10.0 for his compulsory PH exercise and for his optional PH, PB, and R exercises!
