Fred Roethlisberger (USA)

1964 USGF AA Silver Medalist
1968 Olympian

Roethlisberger was born on February 28, 1943 and began gymnastics as a child, when his father took him to the Milwaukee Turners Gym Club.  He had a successful college career, and competed in both the World Championships and Olympic Games.  After the Olympics, he took a coaching job at the University of Wisconsin in Whitewater in 1968.  In 1970, Roethlisberger returned to Minnesota to get his Ph.D. and became that university's assistant gymnastics coach.  He was named head coach in 1971, a position he's held for 33 years.  Daughter Marie (now a doctor) and son John were both Olympic gymnasts.  Marie was the alternate on the 1984 team, and John competed in the Barcelona and Atlanta Games.
