Subject: Judging

Hi Fellow Gymnastics Folks:

I had something really exciting happen to me at a meet yesterday and I
thought I should share it with fellow gym fans.  I was judging the
Rainbow Riders Invitational in Chambersburg, PA.  The morning session was
level six compulsories and I gave my first perfect ten of my judging
career.  I have been a judge for 15 years and this is the first.  It was
an incredible routine.  Like Nadia's tens of 1976, the flashers were not
ready for it, so they put up a one.

I believe that the 1-1/2 is worth as much as the double because
of the direction of the landing.  The 1-1/2 has a blind landing and is
more difficult to stick.

Subject: Jennie Thompson wins Kodak/Peachtree

According to USA Today Jennie Thompson competing in her first meet in 18
months won the all-around, floor exercise and balance beam at the
Kodak/Peachtree Invitational in Atlanta on Sunday.  Shannon Miller did not
compete due to an arm injury. Dynamo won the team award.   Information is
also provided about the Resse's Cup, but not as detailed as we have
already received on the list.

I also did not watch the Super Bowl last night and when I was channel
surfing I stopped at ESPN and I watched about a split second of a show
called "American Fitness Pagent", which is like a beauty pagent but all the
women are in super shape and do work out routine, etc. I guess it is
for women who exercise alot but aren't really "big" like a body builder,
if you get what I mean.

Anyway, I heard someone say KAROLYI, so I flipped back. It was a 23 year
old from South Carolina named Kelly Ryan, who was saying (voice over her
walking of stage and showing off to the judges) that she trained for
6 years with Bela in Houston and she trained along side Mary Lou, Julianne.
and Kristie Phillips.

It was rather odd to find something like that. One word, KAROLYI, and I
new something was familiar.

Ms. Ryan didn't make it to semi-finals so I switched back to the AB FAB
marathon. Anyone remember her? Ryan may be her married name, so I have no
clue as to if I could locate her. She was in EXCELLENT SHAPE. I liked
her abs particularly.

I hoped she made it to semi finals, that way I could have seen if she would
have doen gymnastics in her work-out routine.

Anyway.....back to work.

Hello!  I have been living in England since August, and have just returned to
the US.  I am glad to finally rejoin the gymn group, as I have missed the
discussions greatly.  My intro should be in the old files, but briefly I have
been a gymnast, a judge, and a coach.  I am now a senior in college at Texas
Tech University where I helped start the Tech gymnastics club 1 1/2 years
ago.  I look forward to sharing ideas with everyone again!

Slowing down? Are you sure that that is all?
Because I would hate to see her quit I really would, I mean, she worked
so hard and things seemed to be going as planned at the RnR meet. Has
anyone seen anything else or heard anything else? Where is Rachele when
you need her?I sure hope that wherever she is she comes back with news.

1-20-96
University of Michigan vs Minnesota

Minnesota hands UM their first defeat.
Well, since the meet was in Minnesota, this will be short.  Needless to
say we all are shocked here at UM as our Wolverines lost.  Minnesota won
191.125 to 190.325.  UM's only individual winner was Nikki Peters on the
vault with a 9.9.  Nikki later injured her leg so badly on floor, she
didn't finish her routine.
Basically, Coach Plocki summed it up "What happened was that we breezed
through the first meet and we got complacent...hopefully we learned a
lesson."
The highlight for UM was a vault total of 49.025.
On bars, we ran into trouble.  4 out of 6 gymnasts fell.
Scores, from the Michigan Daily are as follows:

AA:
1.      Mindy Knaeble (Minn)
2.      Wendy Marshall (UM)
3.      Andrea McDonald (UM)

V:
1.      Nikki Peters (UM)               9.9
2.      Wendy Marshall (UM)             9.875
3.      Heather Kabnick (UM)            9.8

Bars:
1.      Kristin Vandersall (Minn)       9.875
2.
3.      Andrea McDonald (UM)            9.85

Beam:
1.      Susan Castner (Minn)            9.8

Floor:
1.      Mindy Knaeble (Minn)
2.
3.      Andrea McDonald (UM)

(Some scores were not provided )

Next Meet:      1-26-96 vs Massachusetts at UM

OTHER NEWS:

UM has signed Kellie Davis and Sara Cain.
Heather Brink has signed with Nebraska.

Subject: Calfornia vs. Arizona, San Jose St., Sac. State (W) Report

Friday, Jan 19th was the first meet of the season for the Cal-
Berkeley Bears.  They were hosting the #7 ranked Arizona Gymcats, San Jose
State and Sacramento State.
From the beginning it was apparent that the primary showdown was
going to be between Cal and Arizona.  Sacramento State had a strong
contender in senior Natalie Cadondon, but not enough depth to challenge the
Bears and the Gymcats.
In the first rotation Cal was on vault and Arizona on floor.
Arizona freshman Heidi Hornbeek threw a double layout to garner the top
Floor score for Arizona and the meet (9.85).  However, by the end of the
first rotation the Gymcats had to count a fall and an out of bounds which
led to a 47.55 set score.  Cal opend on what has become a strong event for
them - vault.  With a 48.3 set score the Bears gave the Gymcats notice that
they were going to dog them all night.
The second rotation found Cal on bars and Arizona on vault.  Cal
turned in some solid performances on bars, including Christine Nishimoto's
creative, quick-thinking save (a long story....), but still they had to
count one fall.  With a 47.775 set score the Bears stayed a whisker ahead of
the Gymcats by .425.
The third rotation brought Arizona to their strongest event of the
evening - bars.  Led by freshman, Maureen Kealey's 9.85, Arizona turned in 5
strong routines for a 48.9 set score.  In fact, Arizona had the top four bar
scores of the night (Kealey, Kristin McDermott {9.825}, Shane Albritton
{9.775}, and Becky Bowers {9.75}).  On beam, Cal's Candace Kwok answered
back with the top beam score of the night (9.85), but that could not offset
a fall that the team had to count.  By the end of the third rotation,
Arizona had moved ahead of Cal by .85.
in the fourth rotation, the Arizona Gymcats came to the beam and the
Cal Bears moved to the floor.  Both teams had problems in the last rotation,
as well as some moments of brilliance.  Cal needed to do some damage control
so they pulled out all of the stops.  Bears, Heather Schneider and Angela
Mapa went for their double layouts, but opening night jitters brought them
down short.  However, freshman Emily Bails, in her first meet in two years,
used the music from "Mortal Kombat" to demonstrate that she will be a force
to be reckoned with for the next four years.  Mindy Ornellas landed her full-
in double back with only a step out of bounds (9.70) and teammate Candace
Kwok hit her piked double back for a 9.775.
As it came down to the last two routines of the night, it was clear
that both teams were going to have to count two falls each in their set
scores.  On beam, Arizona's sophomore, Nancy Milberger mounted with a punch
front and dismounted with a front-full to turn in a 9.775 for her team.
Then freshman Heidi Hornbeek rose to the challenge and got the job done.
She mounted with a beautiful planche, hit a great Popa, and a minute and
twenty seconds of excellence later, dismounted with a double back. (9.80)
The competition ended with Arizona leading Cal by 1.00 (191.875 to
190.875).  Sacramento State started their season with a 185.725 to come in
third, while San Jose State came in fourth with a 183.60.
All-around honors went to Gymcats Heidi Hornbeek (39.05), Tenli
Poggemeyer (38.70) and Sacramento State's Natalie Cadondon (38.225).

1-26-96
University of Michigan vs. University of Massachusetts
(and the return of May May Leung (Michigan '95) back to Ann Arbor as
UMASS's Assistant Coach.)

This past week has been a rough one for UM, and it looked as if it would
carry on into this meet.  After the Minnesota meet, half of the team
fell to injury. Only seven gymnasts were healthy and all were needed for
the meet tonight.

Vs Minnesota, Nikki Peters and Heather Kabnick failed to complete their
floor routines due to injuries.  Lisa Simes found herself nursing a
stress fracture in her shin. Kristin Duff has a sore shoulder. Autumn
Donati has two broken toes.

So, UM came into tonights meet looking to two freshmen to lead UM to
victory:  Beth Amelkovich and Kathy Burke.  We also looked to our
upperclassmen:  Wendy Marshall, Dianna Ranelli, Tina Miranda, Andrea
McDonald, and Lauren LaBranche to secure victory.  And this small team of
7 did just that...

UM won the dual meet:  193.40 to 191.475

Both Kathy and Beth stepped up and proved that they are talented
gymnasts...Andrea McDonald once again showed her consistency and talent,
and this time was rewarded with the AA title.  Wendy Marshall showed the
crowd how she can pull this team to victory with a perfect 10 on vault!!!!

(I had difficulty getting UMASS's beam scores.  UM flew through their
floor routines and our announcer never announced their names)

AA:     1. Andrea McDonald (UM) 39.025
        2T. Wendy Marshall (UM) 38.90
            Beth Amelkovich (UM) 38.90

Vault:  1. Wendy Marshall (UM) 10.0
        2T. Denise Johnson (UMASS) 9.65
            Lianne Laing (UMASS) 9.65

Bars:  1. Beth Amelkovich (UM) 9.85
       2T. Tara Swartz (UMASS) 9.8
           Tina Miranda (UM) 9.8
           Andrea McDonald (UM) 9.8

Beam:  1. Andrea McDonald (UM) 9.925
       2. Lauren LaBranche (UM) 9.825
       3. J.J. Tolhurst (UMASS) 9.725

Floor:  1. Beth Amelkovich (UM) 9.80
        2. Tara Swartz (UMASS) 9.775
        3. Kathy Burke (UM) 9.75

I was so impressed with Beth Amelkovich.  We knew she had talent , but
for a freshman to step up as she did, under so much pressure, well I have
a lot of respect for her.  I also was so proud of Kathy Burke.  She never
has been in AA before and performed great.
As for UMASS, they were very impressive and will improve over the next
few meets.  Tara Swartz is very talented.  And the team throws some great
skills on bars and some strong tumbling passes on floor.  I think if
their vault improves, they could go to the super six.

Next Meet: Feb.4                State of Michigan Classic
Next Home Meet:  Feb. 17        vs. UTAH

For all you television and gymnastics fans, Kathy Johnson's husband is Brian
Patrick Clarke.  He was on "Eight is Enough", one of the sister's husbands,
and on the soap "General Hospital", he was Grant Putnam.

Subject: FIGURE SKATING VS. GYMNASTICS

I'm probably going to make some people mad with this, so let me first
say that I like figure skating very much.  I think it is a very difficult and
beautiful sport.  However, I guess you could say I'm jealous for the attention
the sport gets versus the attention gymnastics gets.  I love gymnastics more
(of course) and think it also deserves television attention.  I mean here lately
there is a figure skating competition on every weekend atleast!  Where is all
the gymnastics.  I think one reason for this is that they do more exhibitions
than gymnastics does.  Let's change that!!!  I talked this over with a friend of
mine and she said that another reason may be because no gymnast has had another
gymnast clubbed on the knee!  (Some of you may think that's uncalled for, but
the sport of figure skating has gotten more attention after that incident)
Anyway, all I'm saying is that gymnastics deserves some more attention too!

Subject: FX mats

I recently competed on a bright green Gymnova Floor. The was a great Floor
to tumble on because it was so soft and bouncy, but it was very
distracting. Why does Gymnova have such an awful color for such a great
Floor. Do Gymnova Floors come in any other colors?
