Subject: floor ex mats

I was just watching a tape of a competition, I think it was Euro. Chps. and the
gymnasts were performing the floor ex on white mats. I was wondering if each
country has its onw color of mats. To me, the white mats were almost
distracting, but maybe thats just because I have been watching mainly American
meets lately and they usually use blue. Do the gymnasts ever find this
distracting? I didn't really even like the clay colored mats at Barcelona.
Anyway, I was just wondering if anyone knew anything about this???

Wow, Bogi went back to Bela, too! I find this extremely interesting.
Who next to return Jenni Thgompson? Does anyone know how she is doing?
She should be competing in some big meets if she plans on making the
Olympic team. I hope the move back to Karolyi's will be good for Strug.
I think she is an excellent gymnast, but she lacks a certain spark. She
doesn't appear to enjoy gymnastics. Whenever I have seen her compete,
she always has a dissapointed look on her face, even when she has done
really well on an event. It looks as if Bela WILL be the head coach for
the Olympics, especially if he has 3 girls on the US team (and a 4th on
the Belarussian team). Hopefully this will improve the chances for the
US to do really well, but I think that a Bronze in the team competition
is the most likely for the US. I believe China and Romania will vie for
1st, but then again it is still early yet.....

In case anyone wants to stop by, I have registered a channel
<#gymnastics!> on the IRC. You can access it through any Dalnet server.
Of course, you can only talk if somebody else is there, but I am usually
on the IRC late at night, from about 10 to 12, most nights. I open it
and wait for people to drop by, while I talk on another channel, so give
me a minute to notice that you're there.
OK, am I correct in thinking that the weekly Gymn chat is on #gymnastics
on EFNET? I tried accessing #gymnastics through UNDERNET and DALNET
servers this week, but I was the only one on it. You do realize that
the three irc nets are not connected, right gymn managers? #gymnastics
on undernet and #gymnastics on efnet are not the same. I think somebody
needs to clarify which net the weekly chat is held on. Thanks for all

Interesting topic. For those of you who don't go to NCAA
meets(Women's, I know), many of the schools have their school color as the
mat color. For example, Georgia's is red, Alabama-red, and LSU is
light purple. I don't know of any other schools. This started a few
years ago. Speaking of distracting the gymnast, I remember at SEC
Championships at LSU a few years ago, several gymnasts went out of
bounds because they couldn't judge where they were. I think the
light purple was blending in with the white border. I believe now it
is mandatory for the HOST school of a championship to use the
regular blue color, but I'm not certain of that. I haven't seen any
other color than blue at a championship since that time at LSU.

MASSTARS Starlight Invitational has been scheduled for Feb 17-18.
Compulsories are competing on Saturday and the Optionals on Sunday.
This will be held at the Algonquin Regional High School in Northboro, MA.
Anybody from MASSTARS on the list with more information on times than our

one ever had enough mats, so some were brought from other clubs, and one
meet I remember we had blue and gold stripes....

Subject: looking for a gymnast

Hello Everyone!

My name is Amy and I am brand new to this list. I am sorry to say
that I don't have time to lurk before I break out with my request because I
am working against a tight deadline. Also, I believe that this post will be
of interest to anyone interested in gymnastics.

I work for a company called Girl Games in Austin, Texas. We are producing
an interactive cd-rom for girls ages 8-14, and a portion of our first title
will be dedicated to girl's sports. We are looking for girls to profile on
the cd between the ages of 9 and 18. We will not be able to pay anyone,
but the athlete will receive a free copy of the cd once it's finished in
August. We will send her a packet that will explain that all we need is a
series of photographs of the young lady doing gymnastics (which will be
returned unharmed) and to have her answer some questions through snail mail
about her workout, eating habits, and her experiences with the sport.

There is no bonus for level 8. Level 8's can do C skills but they only get B
credit for them. A level 8 optional routine can earn yp to a 9.6. They are
allowed NO BONUS at all. Level 9's may earn up to .2 in bonus for connections
only. i.e. they may do a flic flac,layout stepout,layout step out on beam for
.1 and then earn another tenth for say a switch leap, ring jump. Both of
these connect 2 C skills. There are some bonus combos that connect B skills
to higher skills and even a couple on beam that earn bonus with A skills as a
part of the connection(they must have direction change though like cartwheel,
gainer layout). So in this respect level 9's may earn up to a 9.8 on each of
their routines. If a level 9 does a D or E skill she will only receive C
credit for it. Therefore they may not earn bonus for extra D/E skills in the
routine. Level 10' s and Elites are the only ones who can take full advantage
of the bonus system.

Well, first off, I have to say I'm biased... but... I personally think
that Kelli Hill has the inside track on being the head coach.

1) Besides Dominique Dawes, don't forget that Larissa Fontaine, Regan
Tomesak, and Marianna Webster all train with her. Larissa has already
been a member of the National Team and folks shouldn't discount Regan
lightly. As far as Marianna goes, if she can get back to the point
where she was, she also would have as good a chance as any to make the
team.

2) In my opinion Kelli showed what she could do with the team at the
World's before Sabae.

3) I think that USAG "likes" Kelli more than either Bella or Steve. She
has been much less of a political pain in the a** then either of those
two.

4) One of the coaches has to be female... why not the head coach?

Again, I'm biased, remember, my daughter goes to Hill's. But I think
that her coaching philosophy is better for the athletes.

Are the skills that count as having direction change different for Level
8? I'm just wondering because that combination wouldn't be classified as
having a direction change in elite, since skills like cartwheels and
roundoffs are sideward skills, not direction changes.

I am trying to get in touch with Lori Akers, who as far as I know
is a member of this discussion list. Her address used to be
gymfoto@aol.com. I was on an extended trip this summer and didn't stay
in touch with her. When I got back home, I tried to e-mail her, and my
mail came back as "no known address". I talked to Georgia gymnasts
Julie Ballard and Leah Brown today, and they said that they had not
heard from Lori since this summer and would very much like to talk to
her. If anyone has any info on Lori's wherabouts (sp?) or new e-mail
address, please e-mail me. Thanks a million and go Dawgs!

I compete for my high school, and we practice on red mats. At our first away
meet, the mats were navy blue, and I found it very distracting. (This could
be because after my first floor routine all I could remember seeing was the
floor!) I also thought the floor looked too big, although it was the same as
what I was used to.

This reminds me of scenes from last year's Oscar-nominated Chinese movie
"Farewell My Concubine". It chronicles the lives of two young boys in a
Chinese opera troupe. One boy was dropped off at the opera school by his
prostitue mother. The film shows how the boys were violently "disciplined"
by the opera masters to perform acrobatics and develop flexibility (side
splits against the wall with bricks at the ankles).

Since childhood, I had always admired Chinese opera and acrobatic
performers -- until I saw this movie. This is a very realistic portrayal
of history. And no one that I know from China denies that this is how they
were trained. What is most disturbing is that is still goes on today!
