There is no reason in particular, such as being injured or what-not. Many
of the already-qualified gymnasts withdrew because they only came to
Classics to compete compulsories. Whereas they compete optionals all the
time, they get very few chances to compete compulsories. This was their
last chance to be judged on comps before Nationals and so many took
advantage of that.

One might wonder why they didn't go ahead and just compete optionals since
they were there, but the two prevailing answers on that are generally "why
risk injury" or "why risk losing". Also, many of those who withdrew were
already in practice at their own home gyms by the time that optionals came
around, as they went home on Saturday morning.

Instead being surprised at so many withdrawing, many people there were
surprised that more girls *didn't* withdraw.

Regarding Nelli Kim, I am curious about one thing. I also admired her
gymnastics and am happy to hear that she is in the U.S. and is well respected
as a person and judge. But I seem to recall that there was a time when she
was considered to be a biased judge toward the Soviet gymnasts, and was
possibly even reprimanded in some way for this internationally. Is this true
or am I remembering incorrectly?

As I recall, Kim was suspended as a judge for giving Boginskaya a 10 on a
vault with an obvious step.

Subject: What is this all about?

I am sometimes in a hurry and do not read all the mail directly related to
a gymnastics issue. I have read a little about Spartanburg, but I missed
the beginning statements about the issue. Where did homosexuality come in
to the issue? Are there some openly gay gymnasts on our men's team. I
know that some are married and have steady girlfriends, so it really
surprised me to see this. I would appreciate it if someone would mail me
privately about this because so many people want the issue to be removed
off of the list.

Hey all! A couple of thoughts on this discussion.

1. As others have said, I believe Marinescu's statement was
a case of bad translating. Sometimes the questions IG asks
in interviews seem not to be too relevent.

2. Both Marinescu and Moceanu are good gymnasts but neither one
is the favorite in Atlanta. Pods is World and now European
Champion, and thus should be considered the "offical" favorite.

3. As someone else noted they may not even meet in the AA.
Dominique could flub at trials (they 100% this year) or
Alexandra who is not Deva and thus not one Octavian Belu's
gymnasts could simply not be in AA of event finals because
of the 3 per country rule.

Actually, Marinescu is at Deva now. I'm not sure since when, but
she moved to Deva before PUR Worlds for sure.

Subject: Need olympic housing??

Hi:

I wanted to let those of you planning on attending the olympic games that I
know of a few people who are looking to share hotel rooms during the games.

>From July 14 - 17 (podium training) (check in 7/14 and check-out 7/17)
there is a Econo Lodge hotel 3-4 miles from that MARTA Line between Atlanta
and the airport.
Then from July 24 - 29 there is space available in the Holiday Inn - 1
block from the MARTA line.

Prices will be reasonable, none of my friends are out to make money, just
to cut expenses.

A thought, if you were planning on camping, you may want to reconsider at
least for a few nights, as they are already reporting people passing out
this weekend who were competing at the olympic stadium from the heat and
humidity.

This offer of housing is for anyone coming into the games, including anyone
from overseas.

I was wondering if anyone knew what has happened to Oksana Fabrishnova. She
is one of my favorite gymnasts and has missed most of the recent meets. She
wasn't at Puerto Rico, at European's and I did'nt see her name in the

To reply to Shawn's post on ncaa questions:

39.80 is no longer the ncaa all-around record. (By the way, you left Florida's
Kristen Guise off the list of gymnasts who hold that score.) Utah's Suzanne
Metz hit a 39.95 in 1995, which was the record (unofficially, because the NCAA
recognizes scores from the championships only) until this year.

Georgia's KARIN LICHEY, a freshman, nailed four perfect 10.00s for a 40.00
against Kentucky 2/23/96.

Also, Georgia's LEAH BROWN scored three 10.00s at the 1996 NCAAs - all on vault
(one in prelims, one in team finals and one at event finals, although her
second vault scored a 9.90 - for a 9.95 avg. and the event title.)

Hope Spivey never scored three 10.00s in the same NCAAs (she and Heather Stepp
each had two in 1993, though).

** While on the Kim Kelly subject, let's not forget AMANDA BORDEN (Georgia
signee). It's my understanding that she too scored well enough at Trials
to make the training squad, but was pushed off in favor of others.

This is what I was afraid of...to my knowledge the men's gymnastics team is
heterosexual. However, their sexuality has NOTHING to do with the issues of the
Spartanburg officials.

Subject: world rankings?

What exactly constitutes what "ranking" a gymnast has in the world? I always
assumed it was how they finished at worlds, but what about Shannon Miller,
the 2-time-world champion? She finished 10th at worlds, but surely she's not
ranked 10th in the world. Also what about Bogi? I don't know how she
finished at worlds but she finished second at Europeans. How does that
factor in?

If anyone has the current world rankings, could they post them please?

Subject: Outspoken-ness

Hi all, I'm back for my weekly e-mail check.

So much news to comment on!

I think that the posts being made about the "quiet" girls are long overdue.
Female gymnasts are so often portrayed as subservient, obedient robots that
anytime a gymnast actually speaks her mind, I am happy or at least relieved.
I can think of a few examples that concern this kind of situation:

1. Kerri Strug commented that she was better than Zmeskal in workouts but
could never beat her in competitions. I think many people believed this but it
was great to see that Kerri could actually say what she felt.

2. Dom Dawes was being profiled during a competition in '93, I think, and it
dealt with the problems in her family life. I'd never heard about these before
the profile. They included her parents splitting up because of allegations of
alcoholism and physical abuse, her brother's autism (which we already knew
about), and her family's problems because of Dom's gymnastics. When the
interviewer asked Dom about how the problems affected her, she said all she
did was concentrate on her gymnastics. However, the tears streaming down her
face told a different, and true, story.

3. In the early 90's, like 1991, Chelle Stack told of Bela's coaching methods
and how it affected her. This was before the Little Boxes bonanza began, and
it took a lot of courage to speak out against the most famous coach in the
sport. Also, Sandy Woolsey said that although she had a great coach (I think
the whole gymnastics community misses Stormy more than anything!) she saw
other athletes being treated horribly.

I guess my point is that gymnasts should talk more. So often when they are
interviewed it's total BS! It's like there's a form-speech that they all
follow: "I wasn't thinking about the competition. I just concentrated on my
own routines and tried to perform them the best that I could. I'm going to try
to clean up my routines before _____ (name of major competition) and just do my
best there."

And one more comment--Dominique does say "you know" a lot, but my take on it is
this: As a 19-year-old who has 13 and 16-year-old siblings, EVERY teenager
uses that phrase way too much. It's similar to "cool" or "like" being said
whenever they were thinking of what to say next. Although it can be slightly
annoying, I'd rather look at it as evidence that a gymnast, even an elite at
Karolyi's, is still showing traits of being a NORMAL TEENAGER.

Subject: USA Choreography

I agree that the US needs a crash course in expression and dance, with the
exception of a few older gymnasts, but they could still use the help. The US
has many girls with beautiful lines that are wasted on fast, cheesy music from
the 60's. Mary Beth Arnold, Mohini, Jaycie, etc are so beautiful on beam, lord
knows what they could do with a great choreographer. I think the US needs some
international help in the choreography department... The major problem is that
so many of US girls get choreography from Geza Poszar. At the price he charges
you'd think the choreography would be smashing, but it's quite the opposite.
He can only do one style, the Kim Zmeskal style. Kim's routine for 1991 was
great, but only for HER. It's been rehashed so many times that any time I see
a gymnast use popular music I cringe. Think about it...sure, we want inter-
national choreographers...but one from ROMANIA???!!!

I so much wish that Kathy Johnson and Bart Conner were the Olympic TV
Commentators. I find Elfi and Tim rather annoying, especially when they
restate the same thing 10 million times. ("But you've just gotta stick the
landing!" in Dagget's voice gives me nightmares...) John Tesh is just plain
DUMB when it comes to gymnastics. He's just there as a mediator and a nice
voice. I remember he made a comment about Boginskaya during Barcelona that
was really offensive, something about her being very attractive...

Oh well. The mute button may be a good investment, considering the commenta-
tors and the awful music selections (Milo...).

I promise, last one...

Too much pressure on winning GOLD. Do we forget that competing in an Olympic
Games is the highest honor an athlete can attain??? I'm especially bothered
by Miller's motivations for Atlanta...in an interview she said she was so close
to a gold in '92 that she's determined to get one in 1996. That's not her only
reason for staying in gymnastics, but she, Nunno, and the press seem so gold-
oriented. Most were surprised and ecstatic about Shannon's showing in '92...
no matter how she performs in Atlanta she's a great gymnast. I'm just afraid
of how many people (herself, coaches, gymnasts, and the entire American public)
will be disappointed with 2nd place, or just a good showing. And this even
moreso goes for Moceanu. I'll be proud if she medals, considering the pressure
and her inexperience.

Leaps are boring! On floor, that is. Too many straddle-Popa combos. Khorkina
is a notable exception. I still think Brandy's leaps were the best...and she
had originality too. Sure, she did a straddle combo, but her tuck-to-split
leap always amazed me. I can't explain that leap any other way, sorry.

Where was Jaycie during US Classic? I think she may surprise many in Atlanta.

Oh gosh, I hope that's it.

Subject: Bars connections.

Maybe I'm alone in this, because no one has said anything, but I really dislike
the connections from low to high when the girls end up standing on the low bar.
It's an easy way out when there are so many beatiful ways to get up to the high
bar (Shapshinokova (sp?), free-hips, and variations). I think it stops the
flow of the routine, looks awful, and isn't real bars. Just look at the major-
ity of the Chinese routines, even the tiniest girls utilize releases between
the bars and so many of the European gymnasts use the standing on the bar
technique. Also, what are the changed planned for the new Code of Points?
There sure as hell'd better be a lot of them!!

Personally, I like Elfi, Tim, and John Tesh. At least Elfi and Tim
don't talk during thr floor routines. Well, if they do it's only for
a second. I like all of the commentators, actually, but don't like
it when they try to talk during the floor routines.

Is anyone ever going to be satisfied with who does the commentary?

I'm sure this will make some people wonder, but, I like Mara Driscol
too.

Subject: 97 code changes

Is anyone else shocked at the new code changes? The elite men start at an 8.8
and the elite women start at a 9.0. And so many elements devalued. Double lay
out on bars=d giant full bars =c and almost all fronts on floor knocked down
also. Front full on vault 10 to a 9.6. Does anyone think this is not good for
the future of gymnastics? I wish they would reward the clean skills and
artistry. But at this rate everyone will have to do quads on floor! I don't
think it helps the injuries in the sport . When will it end. They want the
longevity of the gymnasts but how can this happen if only children that weigh
60lbs will be able to keep up.?

Just about anyone would be better than Elfi S. now that I have been
spending some extra time watching old competition tapes...Was watching
the 93 American Cup early this morning, and during Larissa Fontaine's
floor exercise, and during Elodie last-anem-eludes-me-right-now from
France's fx, she repeated again and again how 'more gymnasts were doing
front tumbleing' and how she 'didn't like it' and 'thought it was a move
in the wrong direction for gymnastics'. It was driving me nuts. Whether
or not she's right isn't my concern.

Anyone got any comments on whether or not front tumbling was a wrong
direction to take gymnastics fx's? Personally, I like it. A welcomed
change after seeing the round off...then five skills all backwards. I
like the combonation really. -Lisa
