Okay, I've been meaning to ask you this for months now.  What is the origin
of this sig?  I believe I know, but I don't want to look stupid unless I have
to.  :D  Or maybe I should just ask if you're a "Kindred Spirit."

Hi Gymners,

I believe the reason gymnasts are not suspected of taking performance
enhancing drugs such as anabolic steroids (for strength gain) is that
there is a side effect of balance problems, so to date there is no known
drug that can assist a gymnast without causing some fairly major problems.
This theory was from a few years back so if amyone has more up to date
knowledge on this please share!

There was and maybe still is, a suspicion that femle gymnasts use 'brakes'
to prevent the onset of puberty, this is unproven and denied by coaches
who put long training and strict diet as the reason for late menarche and
development of elite female gymnasts.

Silvia Mitova had extremely long nails in Barcelona 4 years ago.  It has
always baffled me why they wouldn't be a disadvantage or a hassle, but i
suppose they must't be as so many gymnasts have them.

Personally, I'd love to compete with no top at all- that damn
jersey is annoying and uncomfortable!  Much easier to compete with just
shorts!
Of coarse, that two piece thang for the women is a great idea!
I'll second that motion!

Did anyone really enjoy this movie?  When it first came out, of
coarse, we all loved it- it was a movie about gymnastics!
But I saw it again not too long ago, and I honestly have to say, it
sucked!  Look at the technique they used for all the gymnastics shots
(speaking about the men's gymnastics)- it was terrible and embarrasing!  (I
mean, what the hell is a "tripus" anyway?)  Mitch Gaylord needed to stay in
the gym, and away from acting!
I know the women's gymnastics wasn't the greatest, either!  They
all looked like they should be in a photo shoot for a modelling agency
wrather than tumbling!
Of coarse, there was always that joke of a movie "GymKata".  That's
almost up there with Jerkey Boys, Brady Bunch, and Monty Python!
Are there any DECENT gymnastics movies?  I think we all need to ban
together and gang up on the movie directors until we get one created (one
maybe with a little realism!)

Hi Jordynn & others on the Gymn List.

I will do my best to record all CBC english coverage, and there is a fair
bit of it.  Jordynn if you are keeping a list going, could you forward me
some info.  Others on the list, let me know who you are, just in case.

Jordynn -

Your idea is a great one, but perhaps not quite so straightforward as you
might think.

One major problem is that videos from North America use a different system
to ones made in Australia.  I believe the UK and Germany use the same system
as us.  One system is known as PAL, the other as NHS (?).  I think we use
the former.  Anyway, the two systems are not compatible, therefore I cannot
play a tape from the US on my video, unless I get it converted.

I dont' know much about the technical aspects of videos, but I don't think
the conversion process is that difficult.  Some state of the art VCRs can
play both, however.

The other problem, as Ann Reed pointed out, is copyright.

At any rate, I will be attempting to stay up all night for women's team
optionals (starts at 1am).  Lucky me, AA doesn't start until 4am!!!
(Melbourne time)

BTW, for Aussies gymners, there was a great pic of Lisa Skinner on beam in
today's "The Age".

:)
