Marian Browne passes away
Severely edited from the AP . . .
Marian
Twining Barone, a bronze medal-winning gymnast in the
1948 Olympics .
. . died
Thursday of cancer. She was 72.
Barone also
was on the 1952 U.S. Olympic team and held national titles in
gymnastics and track and field events from 1940 to 1952.

Barone taught high school . . . from 1958 to 1963, then became
women's
gymnastics and swimming coach at Marshall
University in Huntington, W.Va.
In 1967, she returned to Philadelphia
as gymnastics, diving and swimming
instructor and
coach at Temple University. She retired in 1984.

Upcoming meet reporters
For this weekend, Debbie and Sherwin will be
covering
the Women's Europeans. Sherwin will be getting us the
results
and his commentary, and Debbie will be
photographing and also
providing commentary (I
think), when she returns to the States.
This weekend, I will be at the
US Classic, but I will not be
reporting for Gymn since I will be working on the US Classic
web pages for USA Gymnastics. Results and commentary will be
uploaded there, and a link will be provided from the Gymn
homepage.
If you
have a gymnast in particular that you want me to watch
at
US Classic, then *send me* her name.
(Please don't post
these requests to Gymn.) I can't
make any promises
because there are so many
gymnasts, and getting the web pages
up so quickly
consumes a lot of my attention -- however, I will
try
to keep an eye on requested gymnasts if at all possible.

This MAY seem like a stupid
question, but here it goes:
If
an individual qualifies for the olympics
without the team, then
does that berth allow only that gymnast to compete or does
it
guarentee the country they
represent a berth. For example, if
Chusovitina won an indiviual
berth and she can't go (for some
reason) could her federation substitute someone else or is
that
lost and a gymnast who was next in line to qualify might be
able
to compete.
This was something I wondered
about. I know that teams can do what ever
they
want, but with the individuals, I have no clue.
Just wondering.

Amy Chow's Form
Hey
I'm
new on the list, my name's Jennifer, I'm 20 years old,
and I
have recently had to quit gymnastics because
of injuries, school, and
finacial
reasons....but I'm still addicted to it!
I
saw Amy Chow perform here in North Vancouver in 1994, and although
her routines were more difficult than anyone else's, her form
made it all
look sloppy. I thought it might be because it was
early in the season, but
her form still leaves a
lot of room for improvement. She
could be a top
contender if she cleaned it
up. I also noticed every West
Valley gymnast
did a Rudi on the floor...as just
one pass, or if they could, as the
beginning to a
pass. I thought it all looked
really contrived and that if
choreography has to
suffer to get the bonus marks, then something needs to
be
changed.
For
anyone out there who gets The Learning Channel (TLC) on Saturday
at 10PM EST a show called "Peak Performances" will
feature something on
Lavinia Milosovici.

new to this list and don't know if it is proper to

help wanted ads. If it is not acceptable then i
apologize. I am looking
for a full time
instructor/coach. The job entails taking over a 2yr. old boys
team as well as assisting with our girls teams and ,of
coarse teaching
recreational classes.Our
gym is 4yrs. old with an enrollment of 400
students(not
including team). Our girls team has levels 5 - 10. All
of my
instructors are energetic motivating and
love teaching the sport of
gymnastics to all
levels of children.

HI Jennifer, I'm 19 and have also recently quit my gymnastic
training due
to pretty much the same reasons. I'm
developing bad arthiritis :( Blah.
Anyway, it's
nice to meet you on the list. I'm new here too, basically. I
live in Halifax, on the east. You live in BC? And I contend
we stay
addicted to gymnastics :)

I can't add to your commontary as it is exactly how I feel about
Chow's
style, or lack thereof.

Just a quick post on an
article I came across in People magazine this
month. The article was on Dominique, her
gymnastics, parents, Bela,
ectera.....
With all of the hype about her, there seems to be huge amounts
of pressure for her to make it to Atlanta; what happens if for some reason
she doesn't make it?
Anyone else see this article, comments????

NEWSFLASH- According to ACOG,
there are gymnastics tickets available for the
Olypmics.
Available
are: Men's
Optionals, Men Compulsories, Podium training
(pre-competition exercises)
(GA Dome- Atlanta)
Rhythmic gymnastics (Athens, GA.)
I think those who still want
to order tickets for the Olympics should do so
now.
Of course, all sessions that even involve the women are sold out solid.
This
includes the men's/women's event finals. Also note that you may not be
able to get prime seats. A lot of good seats (The most
expensive, $216, for
example) are still available,
but don't expect to get 6 in row.

I agree totally! This is exactally
what happenen to Kim. Everyone made
such
a hype and the pressure finally get to you. I think that Dom. is a
great gymnast, but not the country's best, I believe that MIller is
our
best chance for the gold in Atlanta, and lets
not forget about Strug, she is
7th
best in the world. If MIller is on top of her
game in Atlanta, no one
can beat her.

I have just completed an in
house video for my staff of training techniques
to
use for
work with our accelerated program. The video is designed to show many
of
the drills
we use
for developing young gymnasts, from Preschool through to their
beginning on Team.
The drills are designed to help them develop the basic
optional level skills they will need at L8. Skills covered include Twisting,
Tsukahara Vaults, Giant Swings and Double Back Somis.
While this tape is designed for accelerated
preschool, many of the drills are
applicable to
your class and compulsory team program.
