Hi all

I don't know for certain about this, but last night I caught a
trailer for a programme on C4 which may well be digging up The Book-
style controversy.  The trailer seemed to give examples of bad
sporting practices - this lad's been made to leave school to get a
soccer apprenticeship kind of thing - and there was a shot of a
young girl gymnast with the voiceover "she's been told to lose
weight to succeed", or something along those lines.  From its
appearance it looks like it's going to be a series - the episode they
advertised is on Monday at 8pm, and had a soccer title.

Has anyone else heard anything about this? And have there been others
in the series that I've missed? It may be worth checking out Monday's
to find out more about its angle, and whether they're doing all the
sports shown in the trailer in one programme.

Subject: Endo Receives Medal of Honor

The following (severely edited) appeared on the Kyodo news wire last week.

"The recipients of a Medal (of Honor) with Purple Ribbon, which is awarded
for contributions to education and culture, includes  . . . gymnast Yukio
Endo, 59, who led the Japanese men's team to the gold medal in three
consecutive Olympic Games.

Emperor Akihito will meet the recipients in audiences on May 14-15."

Not to dig up a controversy or anything, but to raise the question,
which is more important, difficult tumbling or adequate tumbling
and terrific choreography? For what it is worth, I think Szabo
deserved the gold, but there are other example over the years where
a tumbler has overtaken better dance.

Subject: Womens Euros tickets for sale (cheap!)

Sorry this is not entirely "news" or "info" but I have a couple of
tickets for the womens Europeans to be held in Birmingham, England,
for sale... they are tickets for 19th May, 1996 Saturday only
where the seniors and juniors AA will be held. I bought them for
myself originally but it turned out that I don't need them...
they are in block 5 (between floor and bars I think, according to
the layout map) and row F (so should be quite near the front?).
The prices that I bought them for were 52 pounds for two, but
I'm willing to sell them for 30 pounds since it's such short notice.
Please contact me if you're interested (or more likely, please
HELP!). Email or phone (01895)270499.

Thank you.

Hi all!!!

I'm probably the last person to do my re-intro.  Sorry.=)  My name is
Nicole but I prefer to be called Nikki.  I'm 18 years old and I'm a
freshwoman at Marymount College.  My major is foods and nutrition and
I hope to become a registered dietitian as well as an athletic
trainer who specializes in nutrition.  I did gymnastics for 11 years
and last year was my last year competing.  I REALLY MISS IT!!!!  I
coached a level 5 team for a while but now I'm teaching recreational
gymnastics.  My favorite gymnasts are Amanda Borden and John
Rothlisberger.  (Oh, I also think Dominique M. is just *awesome*)!=)

I can't wait for the Olympics!!!!   GO USA!!!!!!!

Gymnastically,

Nikki =)

Subject: TV ALERT re: ESPN men's NCAA coverage

My copy of TV Guide gives the airtime for ESPN's
coverage of the men's NCAA championships as
12:30a.m.-2a.m. *Tuesday* morning 5/14 (Eastern time).

I think this is in disagreement with what was
posted earlier, so check your local listings for
late Monday night/early Tuesday morning, depending
on your time zone.

Isn't it ironic that the men's competition coverage,
with a 90-minute slot on ESPN, will probably have
about twice as much actual competition in it as
the network coverage of the women?

Subject: The U.S. Classic

To the person who asked the question about who will be at the U.S. Classic-

Let's just say a lot of people. Dominque Moceanu is supposed to be there. My
local papers says that "Shannon Miller, Dominque Dawes, Kerri Strug, Amy
Chow, Amanda Borden, and a host of other Olympic hopefuls" are scheduled to
be there.

Well, they are supposed to be there. Don't bet on it. The word always goes
out that some big name so-and-so is going to be competing somewhere, and
something happens, and they don't compete. I remember numerous times in
Atlanta where in several competitions, several big name athletes were
advertised by the sponsors and the papers as "going to be there", and they
don't show up.

Also, I haven't heard very much about the U.S. Classic. It hasn't been
advertised much. It isn't even scheduled to be televised. Even the Budget
Invitational was scheduled to be broadcast by a major network. I remember
the Kodak Invitational (February 1996, Atlanta) wasn't scheduled on a major
network, but it was telecast on ESPN a few weeks later. So if all of these
big names are really at these meet, perhaps ESPN, or SportsSouth, or
somebody will broadcast it.

Somebody please correct me if I'm wrong, but don't a lot of people *need* to
compete at this meet to qualify for Nationals and (probably more important
to them) Olympic trials?  It seems like a lot of folks skipped the American
Classic, which was, AFAIK, the only other National qualifying meet. I'm not
implying that they didn't have valid reasons for skipping the A.C., but I
thought that they had to place well at one of these meets to get a spot at
Nationals and Trials.  As I said, correct me if I'm wrong, but if I'm right,
then this should be a loaded meet with a lot on the line!

Mens European Championships 1996
================================

Copenhagen, Denmark.            9 - 12 May 1996

(Day One)

Team Competition
----------------

Each country could have a pool of five gymnasts and three of them
would compete on each piece of apparatus and the total score
counts.

Belarus the defedning team champions were leading all the way until
the final rotation when they went on the high bar, Andrei Kan sat
on his dismount and Ivan Ivankov fell off his Tkatchev release
move. That destroyed Belarus's chances of retaining the gold, instead
that went to the Russians who had a team of Karbonenko, Podgorni,
Voropaev, Kharkov and Trusch. (Nemov was nowhere to be found... not
sure why)It was great to see the Russians back on top again after
their disastrous showing in Sabae Worlds. Ukraine finished second
(team including Misutin, Charipov, Svetlichny and Kosiak) whilst
Belarus dropped to third.

 1. Russia      (RUS)   171.885
 2. Ukraine     (UKR)   171.285
 3. Belarus     (BLR)   170.997
 4. Germany     (GER)   169.848
 5. Bulgaria    (BUL)   169.435
 6. Romania     (ROM)   168.037
 7. France      (FRA)   167.924
 8. Italy       (ITA)   167.424
-----
15. Britain     (GBR)   162.025

All-Around competition to be held tomorrow. I think Vitali Scherbo
could well be the leading individual gymnast in the team comp but
I could be wrong.

Hey ya'll!
My name is Dean and I just got on.  I am so excited to meet people
interested in gymnastics just like me.  Just to tell ya a little bit about
myself:  I used to be a gymnast for almost 6 years until I had to have both
feet reconstructed with surgery, and I have loved the sport forever and no
surgery will ever change that!  I am from MI, 19, and go to school at Lee
College in Cleveland, TN.  I will be at home in MI till August.  Please
don't hesitate to write with any comments or questions.  I love Kerri Strug,
she is the all time best, and Shannon Miller is cool also.  There really
aren't any I dislike but Marinescu made me a bit miffed in her article in
I.G.  I like Grigory Misutin for the guys, and Scherbo tends to make me a
bit mad at times.  I like Chris Waller and Roethlisberger for the U.S. men,
and the rest aren't too bad.  1996 will be their year to shine, GO
U.S.A.!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Further to my email of 30/4/96, the Australian Gymnastics Federation home
page is now up and running.

Point your browser to http://www.ausport.gov.au/gymhome.html

It appears they still have some work to do on it, but some info is better
than none.  There is also a list of links to the usual gymnastic WWW sites.

I am in the process of doing my own home page, but am still coming to grips
with HTML.

BTW, has anyone seen the gym pictures at
http://www.shu.ac.uk/schoold/lfm/lfmcent/sportsdb/gymind/

I don't seem to be able to access this site and was wondering if it was
worth the trouble.

Remember, like clip art and fonts, you can never have too many gym pictures
on your PC!!

(November 22, 1995)

III.  1996 Coca-Cola National Championships
A.  Qualification to Participate in the Championships
1.  An athlete may qualify to participate in the National Championships
through the USA Elite Regional meets and then the American Classic or
the U.S. Classic. The American Classic is scheduled for February, 1996
in Tulsa, Oklahoma and the U. S. Classic is scheduled for May, 1996.
Site is yet to be determined.

Team automatically qualify into the 1996 National Championships.

So, Miller, Moceanu, Strug, and other gymnasts who represented the
USA at the Worlds in '95 do not need to compete in either Classic
to qualify to Nationals.
