I didn't like the Trials coverage at all.  With 1.5 hours, you would
figure that they would show somemone besides Shannon, the Doms, Amy
Chow, and every once-in-a-while Doni and Kerri.  I can't believe how
much time they spent WAITING for scores.  They could have at least
shown one of Mary Beth Arnold's routines or Theresa Kulikowski's
routines.  Instead, we get a shot of Theresa waiting for teammate Doni
finish her FX.  Sheesh.

Good side of the ESPN coverage: 1.5 hours, lots of routines, not many
cutesy features.

Bad side, in two words: Maura Driscoll.

I mean, come on, I can do a better job announcing than that.  First off,
can she please get it through her thick head that a hop full --> Gienger
on bars is *not* a "Miller?"  Yes, Shannon Miller was one of the first to
do it, but last I checked, it's not actually called a Miller.  Also, that
was great when Amy Chow threw her Arabian-double front-.5 out and Maura
*had no idea what the trick was!*  I mean, aren't the announcers supposed
to be pretty up on the world of gymnastics and stuff?  Anyone who watched
Nationals (or at least read the coverage of Nationals on Gymn ;) knows
that Amy Chow usually throws that move, but all Maura could come up with
was "She wasn't doing that in warmups..." and on the instant replay
"Uh...that looked like a half in-half out..."  And if I hear one more
time how "Moceanu bears a resemblance to Nadia Comaneci and Mary Lou
Retton -- and gee, they were/are all coached by Bela Karolyi!"  I will
scream!

DO NOT READ BELOW IF YOU DON'T WANT TO KNOW WHAT'S GOING ON IN WORLDS

I'm really pleasantly surprised by how well the US men are doing.  Go
them!  And thanks Rachele for posting scores so promptly.

Well, IMO, ESPN's coverage was pretty lousy (compared, for example, to the
waterskiing competition which preceded it; *there* they showed every
competitor).  There was too much dead time between routines, I thought,
which could have been used to show more gymnastics.  I agree with
everyone that Maura Driscoll is terrible.  But I guess that's why she's
on ESPN and not NBC/ABC/CBS.  Kurt Thomas shouldn't be allowed to dress
himself, and if I have to sit through one more Bela Karolyi profile, I'm
going to scream.

Regarding ESPN's coverage --
There were 25.08 minutes of actual routines shown, excellent compared to
network, but they could have filled in with some of the other routines that
were performed and given us 30 minutes of routines and only 1 hour of fluff
and commercials --

but in their defense, the meet was depicted on TV as it felt for members of
the audience.  From what I heard about press row, they were busy getting
updates on Katie Teft, etc.  But I managed to drive to the hotel and back
(15 minutes away = 30 minutes round trip) and only miss one routine.

It was a VERY Slow meet, lots of waiting for scores,  the excitement of
the gymnastics itself could not compensate for the interminable length of
time it took to get through the rotations
(honestly, it is a killer to sit through 2 warm-ups in each rotation).

Just want to add my congratulations to the USA teams for such stellar
performances.  If the women can stay in second with the "weakened" team,
they will be amazing in Atlanta with Dom, Amanda, and Amy healthy.  And,
if the men can stay in medal position, maybe they will finally get the
respect they deserve, especially from their fellow Americans.  Way to go!!

When are the finals for the team?  Is it the 6 (M) and 7 (W)?

Subject: Boginskaya

Yesterday's _l'Equipe_ ran an article about Boginskaya ("Svetlana,
Already the Queen of Sabae").  Here's a recap:

Not all of Boginskaya's compatriots are happy about her return, claiming
that she's doing it only for the money she could get in appearance fees
later on.  She replies, "The words of people don't interest me.  I'm here
because Belarus needs me.  Why should I refuse?"

About Sabae:  "I'll have to get good scores for the team in general and
for Piskun in particular.  But I'm doing this for myself...I don't have
any problems with the compulsories, and I'll have some surprises to show
in optionals.  But it's true that on UB and V I have to work very hard!"

Subject: ESPN Coverage-my 2 cents worth

Hi folks:

I've loved some of the comments that I have read about the coverage of
the Trials on ESPN.  ESPN used to be my favorite gymnastics network
because they used to show lots and lots of routines and keep away from
the fluff that the networks tend to show.  I am sad to report that they
are following the big boys much to my chagrin.  I agree.. Who is Maura
Driscoll?  What qualifies her to announce?  And John Nabors was a swimmer
who turned announcing swimming into announcing athletic events.  It is
scary.  I agree with the person who wrote "Who lets Kurt Thomas dress
himself?"  I might add who lets Kurt Thomas cut his own hair?  And that
garbage about Karolyi...Karolyi has many positive things about him but I
know for a fact that those kids have very monitored diets.  Karolyi
blantantly lied on national television and he didn't even do a good job
about it.  The press just loves him because the rest of the US coaches
come off like idiots.  Maybe a PR lesson for our coaches couldn't hurt!

As for the gymnastics, Miller was robbed.  She was the champion.  (As we
now see by her performance at Worlds).  Moceanu was overscored at
nationals ( I was there and I am a judge) and she was overscored at
trials.  Miller's class and elegance should be rewarded in the general
impression category over Karolyi and his latest political manuevers.

Just my 2 cents worth.

| 2) Do they compete compulsory and optional in AA final?

No, only optionals.  It's "new life" -- no carryover of scores earned
during the team competition.  Only one set of optional routines.

| 3) They compete comp and opt in the team competition, right?

Yes.  Men's team final is Friday night and Women's team final is
Saturday night.

Could someone please explain to me how the championships work.
1. What is the difference between compulsories and optionals?
2. Is the judging any different between the two?
3. Since a country can only have three people in the all-around, who
tries for the all-around and do the scores start from zero?
4. How is the team final determined? From the compulsories that are gymn
   right know?
I just want to know how a gymnastics meet is supposed to run
I think that the public would also like to know. If there
is anything that I left out PLEASE tell me.
5. Does everybody use the same movement and do the same routine in men's
   and women's compulsories.
6. If people are competing out of order, does that mean that this has to
   with determining the team winner.
Just send me anything you know about a gymanstics competiton. It is
so hard to enjoy gymnastics when you have an idea about what is
        going on>
7. So people are bumped down when others preform.  Is it good to preform
   early or late?
When 96 comes I want to be ready.
8.  Does anyone know of a television station anywhere in the world who
is going to have coverage of every gymanstics session at the Olympics.
9.  Who will be covering the session for Gymn

Thanks
