Subject: Re: British Competitors

This is a further comment about the British competitors, and British tv, and
also an introduction.  I've lurked on the list for a couple of months now so
I thought I'd introduce myself.  My name's Claire and I'm a 24 year old
librarian in Sheffield in the UK.  I did gymnastics for about a year when I
was very young and I was hopeless at it, but I've always been a fan.  In
answer to the query from Bex about British TV coverage of the championships,
I've scoured this week and next week's Radio Times and, quite unbelievably,
there appears to be absolutely nothing, except for an hour on Eurosport next
Wednesday morning.  Even this does not explicitly say WGC's, just
Gymnastics.  In view of the popularity of the sport over here, particularly
after the Birmingham worlds 2 years ago, I find this astonishing, so I'd
like to echo Bex's appreciation for Rachele's hard work.  Any information at
all about the performances and the results will be much appreciated on this
side of the Atlantic.  It's probably the only info we're going to get !

Claire.

Subject: Goodbye for a while

Hi Gymners,

Unfortunately I have some unpleasant news.
I am leaving my current employer, and it could take some time
before I'm back on-line. So keep up the good work, and remember:

Happy Gymnastics to you all.

P.S.: If any of you still likes to send me something, use one
of the following addresses:

***@hpbele01.brussels.hp.com (Wim Devyver, a fellow gymnast)
or
***@atea.vnet.be (Raf Van de Vreugde, a former colleague).

P.P.S.: Rachele, I will continue to promote GYMN, so there should
be some other Belgians on the list in the near future.

Don't worry, I'LL BE BACK.

Erik.

Hi.

Does IG have a phone # and/or e-mail address.  I have yet to receive my
Oct. issue (which it sounds like most of you got last week), and I just
want to inquire if there's a problem with my subscription.

Are there any spots on the net where there are pictures from worlds other
than the Japanese site?

I'm impressed that France is ahead of Belarus.  It's great to know that
Boginskaya is there, and doing well:-)

Correct me if I am wrong, but didn't the October Issue of IG go out?
I have yet to receive my copy and am getting a bit anxious.

If so, does IG have a 1800 number?

Another interesting thing I have learned for people that miss broadcasts
of gymnastics in the US.  Most cities have a media library where tapes
are kept on hand for 6 weeks or so.  The best way to find them is
through one of your local new stations.
You can either request a copy of the tape, or in some cases, you can go
down and copy it yourself.  The cost varies depending on the length
of time and tape, but for diehard gym fans, it is well worth the extra money.

TTYL,
Liz B.

My fault for not being clear, I was talking olympian, not college.
Indeed in general I have noticed a dramatic increase in height in
male gymnasts accross the board.

Shawn Adamek (STanford grad) was like 6-1
Gave me real inspiration too, being a golaith like i am.

When Charlie went to olympics first time, everyone was gaga over his height.
Hes downright short compared to some of the college kids now.

Now if guys gymn is allowing the sport to grow with the athlete,
why cant girls gymn allow change and allow women to compete in the sport?
Or is this heressy ?

Tickets for the Atlanta Pre-Olympics Invitational are ON SALE NOW!

They can be purchased by calling (404) 546-4095. (I have NO indea as to what
times to call!) The prices is $15, which I find hard to believe or that they
anticipate a weak turn out.

This information was sent to me from someone at the IBM command post who
I inquired to about tickets to pre-Olympic events. Further info about other
events can be found at the followinf WWW page:

                http://www.atlanta.olympic.org/sports95/sports95.html

Anyone who has no WWW access and wants to know about so things can ask me to
tell them or should call the number listed above for further details. BTW:
The page states that tickets should also be available at the door for most of
these pre-olympic events.

Also: Invitational is listed asNov 16 and 17, NOT THE 15th, 16th as I have
been told by some. BUt who knows. Bets bet is to call.

More later if necessary.

Body types:
I don't think that the sport is trying to discourage taller people,
but I think, since it is so rare to see a "so-called tall" person in the
sport, it is harder for them when they come around because people can't
appreciate what their height does for the sport. I remember when Rhonda
Faehn was around. She was 5'5". Now, that's tall for gymnastics, but I
still can't get over how short that is too me. I'm 6'2", so anything under
5'8" seems short to me. I'd love to try competivie gymnastics, but I know
I don't have the flexibility or will to learn what I'd need to. (I'm also
21).

October IG:
Just a quick summary what was in the issue. They rushed to get it in,
but coverage of nationals is included. I was not as impressed as i normally
am by their coverage, but they did a nice job with the time they had. Also,
there is a ncie profile on Jennie Thompson, and coverage of the Olympic
festival. Overall, a damned ncie job considering the deadlines they had to
be under for that issue. :)

I'm puzzled coz I definately saw the gold medals being awarded to
both Petrova and Serebrianskaya as they both stood on the medal
podium. And Batyrchina and Lukianenko were sharing the bronze.
Unless they have some late change of scores afterwards...

Sherwin

BTW the scheduled broadcast on EuroSport next week was listed
as the "Rhythmic World Cup from Holland" and not Sabae artistic
Worlds.

The meet was shown on Australian TV over the weekend, and like Sherwins
coverage they showed a tie for gold, and a tie for Bronze.  This was the
FIG's TV company which produced the coverage, so it should have been correct.

And I am even more puzzled because the scores are obviously
three-event totals.  I didn't even look at them -- I just saw "RSG
Worlds AA" and downloaded them without checking them first.

Sorry for the confusion!  We'll go back to the scores posted by Rob
and Sherwin. ;)

Subject: Greek Penalty - Worlds

Someone asked why Greece and Ukraine recieved penalties.  Well although I
haven't been able to find out why Ukraine was docked, Greece was
penalised 0.3 for working in the wrong BB order.  I'm guessing it was
a similar situation to Ukraine, though I won't know for sure, until tommorow.

Michelle

P.S.  Does anyone know who the Romanians 7th team member is, since she
didn't compete compulseries?  Or if Lubov Sheremeta was on the Ukrainian
team (where did she finish?)
