Subject: Superstars of Gymnastics

So, what did everyone think of the "Superstars of Gymnastics" show last
night?  It took me a little while to get into it, but all in all, it was
pretty good.  I think it would have been better to see it in person--the
camera kept zooming in on only one person at a time, so it was really hard to
appreciate all of the group performances.  It would be neat if they had a
special mat for these shows--dancing and doing theme productions on the blue
mat with the big white line around it doesn't look too good.  I also could
have done without the half-naked dancing women, but that is just me!
The highlight of the show was FINALLY getting to see crowd favorite Kim
Zmeskal perform again!  She looked excellent, although she seemed a little
nervous.  I love her new floor--very mature and fun.  I hope she'll stay
healthy so she can compete at Nationals.
By the way, where was Betty Okino?  I was surprised she wasn't there.

Kurt Thomas said he thinks Kim will probably twist those moves, but he
didn't say why he thought that so he may be guessing. I don't know if this
is where you heard it, but I heard him say that during the broadcast.

I've seen Svetlana's Arabian double front and it's beautiful, even though
she sat it down when I saw it. This was months ago but I don't remember
which competition.

In April, I had the chance to go and see the Superstars in person in
Philadelphia.  The event was very interesting.  Svetlana had lost very
little considering her age, and time off from intensive gymnastics.  Kim
Zmeskal had the most crowd support of any of the gymnasts there.  She looked
like she was really enjoying herself.  Yes, there was much talk about her
comeback.  Other points of note.  The Romanian women (Milosivich, Gogean,
& Hatagan) looked awful.  They said that they had just arrived, and were
still experiencing the effects of it.  They all looked very tired.  This
event gave me another chance to look at Dominique Moceanu, who I believe
will be great in Atlanta 1996.  Her gymnastics were still pretty
impressive even this was an exhibition.
As for the event itself, it ran TOO long.  There was too much non-
gymnastic happening.  I did enjoy the relaxation of the event.  The
gymnasts and the audience were having a great time.  Finally they had
floor seating that allowed you to be very close to the gymansts performing.
This was very nice!  I have not had time to watch the TV presentation
yet, but I probably will pop in the VCR this weekend.

Anybody have any information about the World Team Trials.  I know
they are going to be held September 8 and 9 in Austin, TX.  I have a free
weekend, and would like to go.  Any information (times, ticket info)
would be wonderful.

Subject: Omelianchik Gossip

This is from a friend of a friend (Nora Schuler/GER) who visited
Oksana Omelianchik's Kiev home back in March/April'95. Some of this
may have already been common knowledge:

"The Omelianchik house is situated in a military complex with lots
of gates and fences around it. Oky's husband graduated from a
military academy and has a temporary job in Moscow (where his
parents live). Usually the Omelianchik house (3-room flat) contains
Omy, Dima (husband), Nastya (daughter) and Oky's mum, brother,
sister and gran. Her sister, Tanya, is a sports acrobat (women's
pairs) and apparently looks like Oky, but darker, she trains 3-4
hours a day. Her brother, Dima, who (as all _IG_ readers will know)
is very ill, due to Chernobyl. His trip to Japan didn't help, and
he's now become withdrawn and short-tempered."

The 10th World Gymnastrada had just taken place in Berlin, Germany, from the
9th to 15th July, 1995. Tens of thousands of gymnasts took part in this
fabulous event, which was quite a treat for spectators. As usual the opening
and closing ceremonies were very colourful and eventful as the Berlin Olympic
Stadium was swarmed with people all performing their bit to make this a
memorable event.

The best show of the week had to be the FIG Gala which took place in the
indoor Mommsen Stadium, where gymnasts from different countries and backgrounds
performed and represented their different cultures through gymnastics. It was
a delight to see all five continents being well portrayed by some very
fascinating and also distinctively characteristic routines. Generally the
performances were all well choreographed and rehearsed, and the FIG must be very
pleased by the standards of this event to make it an overall success.

Someone, about 2 months ago, told me about a gym at MIT where I could come
to work out in the afternoons.  I have since lost the information about
this, and was wondering if anyone could fill me in.  Thanks, and sorry it's
only relevant to some of us (Boston area).

Dear Gymners,

Do you all remember Anne Woynerowski?  She was the 1992 Junior National
Champion.  She just seemed to disapear before Barcelona.  Does anyone know
what happened to her?

Gymnastically yours,

Actually, Lanna Apiskuh was the 1992 Junior National Champion, but  I think
Anne won either the US or American Classic that year.
