After reading Allisons post, I did a little research.

He may not after all get enough of a tap from the spine,

since there is more whipping action from the legs than I originally thought.

(Complicated lab improvised down in initial assembly....)

We figured out (theres 3 gymnasts in this building)

that you only get about 3-4 inches of tap at the hips.

By the end of the feet this tap amplifies to close to 2 FEET !

Physics can be such a downer !

Now when your h-bar is a genuine h-bar and not something kludged up

off the bridge crane in a steel fab area, you might get better results.

Still totally fascinating research problem.

Realism is starting to depress me about a workable answer.

A small tidbit from the Chicago Trib [yes, a tiny bit culled from a much

larger piece, and then edited down]

Skidoo II: Mike Jacki's demotion as head of the U.S. ski federation,

triggered by budget problems that were partly the fault of his predecessor,

owed more to his inability to immerse himself in technical aspects of the

sport and his failure to communicate his plans to the organization's various

constituencies. Jacki was then seen as having exacerbated the budget problems

by making plans for which he had no funds and having to take away from one

area to pay for another. . . In any case, Jacki is likely to stay with the

federation until mid-June, when the International Olympic Committee chooses

the host city for the 2002 OIympics. U.S. skiing apparently doesn't want to

take any action that might be used against the Salt Lake City bid for those

At last year's NCAA's (mens), a hect-back salto was performed.

Subject: Making judges jobs harder

I thought there was a judge who decides what bonus to give and who looks

at the difficulty/requirements. So, it wouldn't really be making the judges

jobs harder, if we gave each skill a number instead of a letter, only the

person who checks for bonus.

> What is a Korbut on vaulting?

A Korbut vault, according to her book (I haven't seen it done

by herself), was a full-twisting on, full-twisting off vault.

i.e. spring from the springboard, a full turn onto the horse,

and then a full turn off from the horse onto the mat. Several

others had done this vault, noticably Elena Davidova who did

it "perfectly" in the 1980 Olympics. Incidentally, Davidova's

second vault in that vault final was a full-twist on, and a front

somi off which is even more impressive but she fell on that

particular try. The British champ of the 1908s, Hayley Price,

also did the Korbut vault very well in her time.
