offline for the last three months. She, I THINK is at Nunno's gym. Let's
see first of all.. since I don't know anything.. is Stormy = Nunno?, And
is the club called the Devils? *shrugs* I'm trying to learn, but there's
not exactly a nice little book to pick up on everything you need to
know.. 8)

Stormy is Stormy Eaton, coach at Desert Devils in Arizona. Nunno is
Steve Nunno, coach at Dynamo in Oklahoma. On the subject of a nice
little book or something that contains everything you need to know --
whatever happened with the FAQ?

Subject: adult gymn classes

I recently found out about an adult gymnastics class that is being
offered at my university. There is one night (tomorrow) that is free for
all students. It's a 2 hour session in the evening. I'm planning to go,
but I wanted to get some background from other people who have taken adult
gymnastics classes. There is a number that I can call for more information,
but I don't really know what sort of things I should be asking.

Here are some of my questions:

1) What sort of things might be done at a first session?
2) Are shorts and a t-shirt okay to wear? (back when I did gymnastics as a
kid I had leotards to wear, but I don't have any now and don't really
want to buy one before I decide if this is something that I'm going
to do on a regular basis)
3) Are there any questions that I should ask about the people running the
session? (ie. what sort of qualifications should I be looking for - I
am assuming that a first night wouldn't get into any high-risk skills
but in case I take the class on a regular basis I'd like to know if
there is some way that I can tell how competent the instructors are)

Any other comments or opinions on adult classes are welcome.

If you have ever been involved in an adult gymnastics class, I'd
appreciate it if you'd email me personally to avoid cluttering the list.
If people are interested in the responses I get, I can post a summary to
the list.

No, the Peter was Kormann and not Vidmar who was having dinner with Dick

Subject: Buckeye Classic

Here is what info I know about the Buckeye Classic. It's being held this
Friday through Sunday at the Celeste Center, Ohio State Fairgrounds, Columbus.
I don't know when it begins on Friday, but on Sat. and Sun. it starts at about
8 am and goes on literally all day! The official march-in is at 4:45 Saturday,
and the top-seeded teams will compete that night. The teams that qualify (I
think usually 8) will compete in finals Sunday afternoon. Admission is $8 per
day.
As for the teams, the top ones I was told were coming are American
Twisters, Colorado Aerials (Doni Thompson and Kristy Powell are on the list)
and Cypress Academy. For the first time since I moved to Columbus (1989),
Hill's Angels is NOT coming, so no Dominique. Cincinnati is coming, but is not
sending their open team, so no Amanda Borden or Jaycie Phelps. :( But the meet
still should be very good. I've gone every year but one since 1989, and it's
amazing how many future Olympians and World team members you see (although you
tend not to know it at the time!)

That article in the Sacramento Bee did mention that a scholarship from
Stanford didn't seem to be in the offing. If this turns out to be true, like
most of us, she probably could use the money for college as well...plus
her body might be telling her to lay off the apparatus' while attending
a school.

Considering the tenuous position gymnastics appears to hold in the athletic
departments of colleges nationwide, one can hardly blame Dominique. When
top-ranked programs are slashed with little or no notice, it is a safer bet
to sign an endorsement deal and get your money for Stanford up front than to
depend on the continued goodwill of the athletic powers-that-be to continue
to pay for your education over four years.

I fear that Dominique's decision will begin to represent a trend. The NCAA
has hardly gone out of its way to make participation in collegiat gymnastics
appealing to former level-9 and -10 women's gymnasts, much less former Elite
gymnasts and national champions.

I will be attending the US Winter Cup as the Gymn Reporter. I think
it will be pretty exciting in context of the positive vote by the
NCAA! In addition to submitting scores and reports, and hopefully a
few interviews, I would like to (if opportunity permits) do an
"opinion" poll of sorts with coaches, gymnasts, etc, asking them what
they think can be done now to work towards building more programs and
ensuring that there is not a problem again in 1997 (when the
moratorium ends). If you can think of other good questions to ask,
please let me know sometime in the next two weeks.

Keep in mind that ANYONE on Gymn can send in scores/reports for a
competition, and in fact if you are attending a meet for which you are
not the Gymn reporter, you are still highly encouraged to share your
experience and impressions with Gymn!

If this *is* true, without knowing the reasons imho it's utterly ridiculous..

Here's an idea. The U2 mailing list I'm on goes by the name "Wire",
which works really well because it's also the name of a U2 song and it
reflects the whole Internet thing too. They got the idea by asking
for suggestions (this was a long time ago, before I was on the list, but
so I'm told). I thought it might be fun to try to come up with
something for our own list (not that I don't like Gymn, but it's not
quite catchy, and besides, I hear Susan can't pronounce it ;). I haven't
thought of anything that reflects both gymnastics and computers, and the
best I've come up with is the Pit (don't laugh, please!). So I thought
I'd throw this idea out and see if anyone's into it. Btw, it wouldn't
mean changing the address or anything (the Wire address is still
u2-list@...). Thoughts?

I don't think Shannon is really in 2nd because I don't see why this
being a "Winter Olympics" year should mean that we discount Bonnie
Blair and Diann Roffe-Steinrotter. It wouldn't be right to discount
the summer athletes in '96 because they had the unfair advantage of
being able to compete in a Olympics. Blair and R-S's accomplishments
were fantastic and I think they are fully deserving of their ranking.

Winter sports have always come up short for many reasons --
overshadowed by the larger Summer Olympics, competing at the same time
as many big pro sports, many championships in the beginning of the
year when they are "forgotten" at the year's end, etc etc. I think
this is one of the better rankings we've seen.

I agree most completely with both this and your point on the undeserved
obscurity of winter sports. My intent was simply to point out that athletes
tend to get more attention year-to-year based on the amount of television
coverage they get. I was not endorsing such nearsightedness, merely
diagnosing media myopia.

My husband subscribed me to gymn in
december, but I've only been a lurker. I am
another gymnastics fanatic; I took gymnastics
in high school and am currently taking adult

American Cup (at the Seattle Center):
prelims- march 2nd, finals-march 4th, and a
new, "mixed pair"-like format on march 5.

You Did It!

Obviously by now everyone knows that the NCAA vote to save
the championships passed by a landslide.

Once I have all of the final statistics I will post them along
with any further information I can gather regarding the effectiveness of the
campaign. Let me now then post the letter which we posted several days ago;
it is now even more appropriate:

We are deeply grateful to the membership of GYMN, Coaches, Athletes,
Parents, and True Believers, for their extraordinary effort and commitment
to the intensive E-mail lobbying offensive which was undertaken to influence
the vote to preserve the moratorium on the NCAA Men's Gymnastics Championships.

At the time we conceived of this progressive and provocative
grass-roots measure, we hoped we would attract many outstanding supporters. We
certainly did in all of you. You truly proved and distinguished yourselves
and indeed surpassed all of our early expectations.

You should take a great deal of pride in having met a monumental
challenge and in having made a truly significant and historic contribution
to the sport of gymnastics.

After Atlanta, the age for international competition e.g.
Worlds and Olympics will be turning 16 for women, and for
Juniors - turning 13.

The 1996 Artistic Worlds will be in San Juan Peurto Rico 15-
21 April. The 1997 Artistic Worlds will be held in
Lausanne, Switzerland.

The first Aerobic World Championships will be conducted by
the French Gymnastic Federation in Paris end of November or
beginning of December 1995 (under the auspices of the FIG).

Sure. It's (303) 573-1995. It looks like Gymnastics tickets are $15 per
event, 4 events total (Artistic). Or you can pay $50 for all 4. They
will be held in Boulder, CO.

There's a meet that I believe is annually held in Petaluma, CA. It's
called the Master's meet and is designed for gymnasts that are not
in the prime years of competition, although there appear to be many age
and skill categories.

It will be on January 28th this year. Anybody know about it's
history? It sounds intriguing. Some of the guys in the U.C. Gym
Club are going. (We're going to sign up Dave Litwin, then get him
up there by telling him Winona Ryder is in town and wants to meet him.
Don't give it away!) I don't believe any of the women from the club
are going, although the meet is for both men and women.

I can post what I know about it tomorrow after I look at the flyer again.

This is one of the neater sounding things I ever heard! Skiing has NASTAR,
Mountain Biking NORBA, and I am sure we can come up with other programs if
we think.

I think this kind of thing would be fun to watch, and even more fun to join
in on, especially if was all levels. Last year my kids' gym offered an adult
program, but it only lasted a month from lack of interest. Maybe a program
like this would add a little motivation. Admitted, people starting late
would probably never competitive with ex-competitive gymnasts, but heck it
would be fun to try.

Men's Winter Cup Challenge Re-Ranking Competition

More than 60 of the top male gymnasts in the U.S. will compete at the
1995 Winter Cup Challenge in Colorado Springs, Colo., January 27-28 at
the U.S. Olympic Training Center. The Winter Cup Challenge serves as
a re-ranking competition for the USA National Team. It also
determines funding for 15 athletes through the 1996 Olympic
Trials. Each athlete is eligible to receive $15,000 per year.

There will be two divisions competing at the Winter Cup Challenge,
Team '96 and Team 2000. Team '96 will do compulsories and optionals
and are attempting to make the '96 Olympic Team. Team 2000 will do
optionals only and have a goal to make the 2000 Olympic Team.

The top 10 athletes in the Team '96 compulsory/optional combined
competition will make up the USA National Team, along with the seven
World Championships Team members who are exempt from the competition
but may compete for score only including: Mihai Bagiu, Casey Bryan,
Scott Keswick, Steve McCain, John Roethlisberger, Bill Roth and Kip
Simons.

Team 2000 is split into two age groups. Seven members ages 19 and
under will make the team and five members ages 20 and over will make
the team for a total of 12 members.

Local Olympic Training center residents Kyle Asano, Lou Datilio, Garry
Denk, John Macready, and Andrew Pileggi, coached by Ron Brant, will
also compete for a top spot on one of the teams.

Winter Cup Challenge Event Schedule:
Friday, January 27/7:00 p.m./Team '96 Compulsories
Saturday, January 28/4:00 p.m./Team '96 and Team 2000 Optionals

A: I can tell you are an especially insightful reader and appreciate the
importance of flame wars on Gymn! Flame wars are like a good mud fight:
They're the glue that keeps us together as a group! The only real guidance
I can give is to keep them going as long as possible. When the flames
start to die down, fan them again. Pick up a minor thing that may have
bothered you awhile back and publicly criticize someone for it. When
all else fails, simply ridicule an elite gymnast or coach. Don't worry
about them finding out. (See below)

A: No one on Gymn really gives a sow's ear what you think, so post away!
We're all here just to blow hot air -- we don't actually LISTEN to each

Respectively, a full turn 360 degrees around, a double turn, and a half turn
(180 degrees) IE if you're facing you're refigerator, and you spin
around once completely so you're once again facing your refirgerator, that is one full turn, also known as a full pirouette.

2/1 turn = double turn (720 degrees)
1/2 turn = half turn (180 degrees)

They're just fractions like any others (3/4, 2/3, 5/8, whatever) you
