Not sure if it's official yet, but "inside sources" report that Lisa
Mitzel-Izzi has been named interim women's gymnastics coach at Stanford
University.
Lisa, a former NCAA national champion, served as assistant
coach/choreographer for the Cardinal women last year under Breck Greenwood,
who was fired a few weeks ago. Good Luck Lisa!

Re Sherwin's comments on Daniela Bartova as a pole vaulter -

does anyone remember a German gymnast called Susan Tietdke who
competed in the early 80s????

I remember reading somewhere a while ago that a German marathon
runner called Susan Tiedtke got busted for steroids.  Anyone know if
its the same person?

Just curious, Simone

Subject: men's NCAA championship update

Hello all -

Here is some additional information on the happenings for the
NCAA men's gymnastics championships after the vote to extend the moratorium.

3 additional amendments have been submitted and this is what they
state:

1.  Intent:  Continue all existing sport championships that have
been sponsored for ten years or longer (18.2.3) sponsor: Iowa

... in a sport that has been sponsored for a period of 10 years or
longer, shall be continued regardless of the number of sponsoring
institutions until such time that legislation is adopted to
discontinue specific championships.

2. Intent:  Create a protected status to continue all men's and
women's NCAA championships in olympic sports (18.2.11)
sponsor: Nebraska

...Exceptions - Men's and Women's Olympic
Sports that have National Collegiate or Divisional championships will
be exempt from the minimum sponsorship percentage requirements of
18.2.3 and 18.2.4 until such time that legislation is adopted to
discontinue specific championships.

3. Intent:  continue moratorium on the discontinuation of any NCAA
championships through 1998-99 (18.2.10.1) sponsor:  nebraska

... During the 1995-96 - 1998-99 academic years, an existing
Championship shall not be canceled ... if during the 1998-99 period
a championship fell below the applicable minimum numerical sponsorship
requirement set forth in 18.2.3 or 18.2.4 it shall be discontinued
automatically.

If anyone is interested in more details of the amendments or reasoning
behind the amendments please feel free to contact me.  Any comments on
which you find most effective would be appreciated and will be relayed
to appropriate parties.

Thanks for your support in saving these championships

Does anyone know more about the

The third annual National GymFest (formerly called the National
Gymnaestrada) will be held in Carmel, Ind. October 27-30, 1995.

My sister Kathryn sent them a letter awhile back about schedules,
locations, hotels and so on and did not get a letter back.  We'd
like to go if we can get more info about it.

This is where she wrote

This has been officially announced.  It makes a lot of sense, since
almost any outside applicant for the position would be pretty much
abandoning his/her own program at this point in the year.

Hi all,

While watching Olympic Odyssey last night on the Prime Network I saw a promo
for upcoming features they'll have on the show in the next couple of weeks.
One of them is an interview with Doni Thompson focusing on how she wants to
some day be an emergency children's doctor. It didn't say exactly when this
would be on, so anyone with Prime will just have to hope they catch it.
Sorry I don't know more.

I've seen a few other gymnastics references on shows and I haven't bothered
to post them because I didn't think they were worth their own post. Did
anyone see the Simpsons this year (it's been on twice now due to reruns)
with the teacher's strike? At one point the gym teacher runs out of the gym
and leaves a girl dangling helplessly from the rings. The girl says, "Mrs.
Pommelhorse! I'd like to get down now!" Also Mary Lou played herself briefly
on an episode of Dream On. I don't know how old the episode was. Those are
the only ones I can remember at the moment.

Ciao,

P.S. There's an adult gymnastics class starting up in my area! I'm happy.
But today I get to go to the dentist for an emergency root canal. Fun.

3RD NATIONAL GYMFEST UPDATE (6/30/95)
Carmel, Indiana
Co-hosted locally by Performer's Edge School of Dance and Theatrical Training

The third annual National GymFest will be held in Carmel, Ind.,
October 27-30, 1995. The first National Gymnaestrada was conducted in
Indianapolis in 1993, and the second in Palm Springs, Calif. in
1994. The 1995 National GymFest will prove to be a spectacular event
with more participants than ever before!

GENERAL GYMNASTICS

General Gymnastics (GG) is a noncompetitive form of gymnastics where
groups of various sizes, ages, and experience levels have the
opportunity to perform exhibition displays with diverse themes. The
performances, lasting anywhere from 8-12 minutes, are c horeographed
to music with audience appeal in mind. The National GymFest provides
an opportunity for gymnastics performance groups to come together
annually to "show their stuff," share in learning opportunities, and
have a lot of fun!

LOCATION
Host Hotel
  Doubletree Guest Suites
  11355 North Merdian
  Carmel, IN 46932
  317-844-7994
  Rates: $77 per night

Rooms have two different set-ups. There are a limited number of double/doubles
available; king-size beds plus sofa doubles sleep four.

LOCAL TRANSPORTATION

You should plan to rent a car if you are flying to Indianapolis. The
host hotel and GymFest site are approximately 40 minutes from the
airport. (Map will be sent upon receipt of entry.)

SPECIAL OPPORTUNITIES

Coaches, parents, senior citizens, and participants with handicaps
will have special choreography arranged to meet specific needs. Some
of this choreography will be presented at the 1995 USA Gymnastics
Congress in New Orleans. Group leaders and instructo rs will be able
to attend an Instructor's Forum in GG and all participants will be
invited to attend special workshop sessions.

As always, the National GymFest will feature many opportunities for
groups to meet socially.

LOCAL DIRECTOR

Ron Morgan, owner and director of Performer's Edge School of Dance and
Theatrical Training and choreographer for the Indianapolis Colts
Cheerleaders, will be the local Director for the 1995 National
GymFest.

THE GALA

The grande finale for the GymFest is called the Gala Showcase. A
pre-choreographed number will be performed at the closing of the Gala
and on Sunday afternoon at the Indianapolis Colts Football game in the
RCA Dome.

The piece will include special choreography developed by experts in
the field for the following: artistic gymnastics, rhythmic gymnastics,
jump rope, adult dance, jazz dance, cheerleading, physically
challenged, karate, and senior citizens.

Performance Parameters

Performance areaOne 42' x 42' matted floor exercise area will be
provided.  Groups will be able to utilize the floor area to stage
right and left of the mat.

Performance length (time)

Displays are between 8-12 minutes. Maximum time in the performance
area is 15 minutes.  Number in groupThe suggested number is 10 or more
per group.

Equipment

The LOC will provide the basic floor mat and sound system. All other
equipment and props must be supplied by the groups.

Theme

The theme for the 1995 National GymFest will be Cirque de
Gymnastique. Just as the world recognized "Cirque de Soleil"
creatively expanded the traditional concept of the circus, Cirque de
Gymnastique will encourage great imagination and diversity in chor
eography, music selection, and costuming.  What kinds of performances
(displays) are permissible? Almost anything! Large and small
groups. Artistic gymnastics, dance, rhythmic, aerobics, clown, and
many other possibilities exist. Group members may be male, female, or
mixed groups of all ageschil dren to seniors. GG is a fantastic
activity for your club members who don't usually get the chance to
travel to participate in USAG Junior Olympic programs.

If you are interested in obtaining more information about GG and the
1995 GymFest including the entry and registration packets, please
email Steve Whitlock on Delphi at "USGF" or USGF@delphi.com

Susen actually changed to a Long Jumper, winning the Silver medal in the
1994 World Indoor Champs.

She was definately caught taking something.  I don't know if it was a
steroid or just another banned substance.  The last I heard, she was
going to appeal against the result of her failed test but this was
2-3 months ago (I think !!!)

P.S - The Gym pages below are now working, although my space is SEVERELY
limited, I've only got a few mini-profiles and about 8 or 9 pics.

Nearly all pics are exclusive to the site though !!!
