Subject: --> EVERYONE _PLEASE_ READ

If you read only one msg on Gymn all year, please read this one!

*Please* remember that Gymn is a *very* public forum. The stuff that you send
to Gymn has the potential to reach the ears of people at the US Gymnastics
Federation, the elite gymnasts that we mention, and just about anyone else
who might care to find out about us. These are not lofty claims, as all of
the above has already happened.

Recently, from multiple sources, I have been catching a lot of flack for the
apparent lack of respect of gymnasts on the forum. Needless to say, I have
found this is very disappointing. It can (and has) reflected very poorly on
Gymn.

Now, friends, keep in mind here that Gymn can be a wonderful thing.  There is
the opportunity to learn *so* much about gymnastics and meet so many people.
We are a well-educated group of people with many knowledgable and respected
members.  Gymn is an unmoderated forum because we have found lots of success
with the informality of Gymn.  However, as you all know, we do have
guidelines which we ask all members to abide by.  If you don't, then we
*will* ask you to leave.  The guideline that has been coming up a lot
recently is the following one:

-> In order to keep the forum friendly, we ask that all members
remember be respectful of others' points of view. It is, of course,
all right to disagree with a person's opinion, but attacking them for
holding it will be considered inappropriate in this forum. Similarly,
we hope to be able to keep the "signal-to-noise" ratio high, so PLEASE
AVOID ALL MANNER OF "FLAMING". This includes statements that could be
considered libelous in nature. Please remember that clues such as
facial expression, body language and tone of voice are missing, making
it easy to misunderstand intentions and jokes.

In other words: be considerate! Note that when we are talking about
"flaming," we are talking not just about other members -- we don't want you
to flame *anybody*.  If you have a problem with a gymnast, fine; just don't
say it on Gymn in an unsportsmanlike fashion.  We don't want that kind of
stuff on here.  If you feel that is too restrictive or you have some other
problem with the way things are, then go start your own forum!

The following disclaimer is going to be added to the beginning of the welcome
letter:

ALL OPINIONS EXPRESSED ON THE GYMN FORUM ARE THOSE OF THE SENDER ONLY.  THEY
DO NOT REFLECT THE OPINION OF GYMN.

If you have a problem with the content of a post to Gymn, please do not
hesitate to contact me.

Any and all opinions regarding this particular post are invited.  I want to
know if you agree with me (and the other members who have complained) or if
you think people are being too sensitive.  I need to know what you all think,
because after all, you *are* Gymn.

Well no men and no date for them in the future. I wonder if they're ever
planning on showing them? Not that is was much of a contest but you know they
used up the film they might as well show it. Do you know that they spent more
time on the Advil mini-marathon (and you know those huge audiences that
marathon's bring in...there's nothing more exciting than watching a pack of
people jogging along and drinking water) than they did gym. Only 38 minutes
(*with* commercials) during a 1.5 hour telecast. Sometimes I think that ABC
just does it to tick me off (quite an ego I've got eh?). Maybe they'll show
the men when they're supposed to later in June.  I live in eternal hope...I
always expect the next coverage to be better..."Oh the sun'll come out
tomorrow..."

I can't believe they didn't show Linlin's beam (but they did show her
floor... that makes sense...why not vault?)...the best part of the meet.
Great that Piskun and Dawes (I'm not a fan as you know...but this is as good
as she looks) blew hit meets on something of such vast international
importance as the Hilton Challenge.

Hmm...what do I hate more than Dawes?...why it's Van Halen...let's combine
the two...of course that's a personal problem that you could care less about
I'm sure.

I'm rambling...bye

Champion in acro gymnastics.  Alfredo has just told me that he won nationals
in Portugal -- I believe in Mixed Pairs.  (He says he didn't tell Gymn
because "its not my style telling everybody."  So I decided to tell you all,

Btw, he also wins the award for longest name on Gymn: "Alfredo Manuel

Same here, I didnt watch it either, I was more interested in
watching the cricket, we played really well too. Gooch got
a double century if your interested.

>Don't want to say this but there're so many gym coverage
>lately that it's hard to watch everything!

It has been hard to keep up with all the coverage. With 2 hour
repeats every morning it does tend to use up your video tapes
quickly, and then by the time you get to watch it you realise
you have got about 10 versions of the same thing. So I
didnt even bother this time, theres just been too much coverage.

Anyway there were far more important things to do this weekend,
like watching the D-Day commemoration (which was very
good by the way)
and doing my college work. I managed to get most of it done if
your interested, no didnt think you would be.

Subject: Gymnastics Coverage (was: Hilton TV coverage on ABC)

Disclaimer:  I haven't watched my tape of yesterday's coverage yet.

First, concerning the complaints about the coverage of the Advil
Mini-Marathon vs. gymnastics.  George writes (in part):

>...I agree
>with Susan that they probably could have canned the Advil Marathon, although
>it's pretty funny that Advil would sponsor such an event.  Pretty apprpriate,
>actually.

FYI, the Mini-Marathon is one of the oldest women-only road races around.
Advil has been a sponsor for this race for only the past few years - L'eggs
was the original sponsor.  BTW, is it any more appropriate that Sudafed, an
antihistamine, is a major sponsor of women's athletics?  The stuff that
immediately comes to my mind include "The Skating and Gymnastics
Spectacular," formerly known as "Symphony of Sport" - benefit weekend for
the Women's Sports Foundation.  Come on...

Also, without doing an actual count on commercials, I'm willing to bet that
Advil may have paid ABC more $$$ to provide same-day coverage.  Think about
it.

I do agree with George here:
>It's amazing how much "larger than life" those meets look on TV than in real
>life.  Those of you that have a chance, by all means go to live international
>meets.  This isn't a knock on the ABC coverage, but TV just doesn't capture
>the true scale of gymnastics.  It magnifies a lot of interesting things, but
>the general feel is so very different.

Maybe this is the root of the problem concerning gymnastics coverage on TV.
Track and gymnastics are two sports where (more often than not) two or
more events take place simultaneously.  This creates all kinds of
challenges for T; notably the need for multiple cameras and staff - and
that means extra $$$. After all that, someone (producer/director) has to
work with the "time budget" he/she is handed (that is, number of minutes
allotted on the actual program) to prepare something coherent that you the
viewer will eventually see.  Of course, something is going to be left out;
hence someone will undoubtedly be unhappy with something.  Needless to say,
this makes even same-day coverage of gymnastics pretty difficult to
accomplish.

Although it's nice to keep hoping for more gymnastics coverage - and there
really is more now than ever outside of Olympic years, believe it or not -
it's not going to happen overnight.  Even with the US's history of skating
champions, it's only been within the past 5 years that US viewers have seen
any of the major international competitions outside of the Worlds/Olympics.
(I refer here to such events as the NHK Cup and Trophie Lalique.)

Bottom line:  If you want to see more gymnastics coverage - and/or coverage
done YOUR preferred way - write the stations and stop whining here.

38 minutes was the time that Kathy Johnson quoted for the girls.  That's
reassuring.  Maybe they'll show the guys after all.  She said they were
going to actually give them more coverage.  Check your TV Guides (if you
get ABC broadcasts, or TV Guide, for that matter.)

Re today's coverage:  I was plesed that the gymnastics the showed was actually
shown in an expedient fashion.  Not too much wasted time on interviews (although
the "traveling backwards on a train in the middle of the desert" look they gave
the Amanda Borden and Dominique Dawes interviews was kind of funny.  I agree
with Susan that they probably could have canned the Advil Marathon, although
it's pretty funny that Advil would sponsor such an event.  Pretty apprpriate,
actually.

Remember our disscussion a few months ago about gymnastics in the movies?
Well, anyway a similar thread is going on over on the skating mailing list
and I just *had* to share one post with you...

"To sidetrack a little..

We're all aware of the habit Hollywood has of filming skating
`competitions' under spotlight to enhance their dramatic impact.

I watched American Anthem last week - a film about a couple
of gymnasts trying to make it onto the US team (for gymnastics).
The film seemed quite faithful to the sport - lots of impressive
training footage etc.. But still, when it came to the big competition
at the end of the film, voila! Spotlights!

Just surprised to see the same thing happen to gymnasts!

Duncan."

I'm sorry I haven't got any info since... ahmm... I didn't watch it! Don't
want to say this but there're so many gym coverage lately that it's hard to

"fact" in that entire pathetic excuse for a film was that the 1987 World
Championships were in actually held in Rotterdam...everything else was - and
please pardon my French - compelete and utter *doo doo* [actual phrase
censored for "Gymn"...aren't you proud of me Rachelle!?]!!

Susan

FYI-leaning on walls and looking "cool" has *very* little to do with
gymnastics

So Gang do you think I was to easy on him?  :-)

Obnoxious As Always,
Susan

Subject: Update on Michelle Campi

Hey Gymn,

I got an email from Michelle Campi about a month ago.  She was not writing
from her own computer account, so I have had difficulty contacting her to see
if I could reprint her letter to Gymn.  So, instead of just waiting, I
decided to just let you know how she's doing before the information got too
old.

The letter is dated May 8th.  She wrote me from Florida, where she was
visiting her Dad.  She said:
----------
... my back is doing very well. I had surgery to stable an unstable
fracture with a rod and some wire. (I had 3 fractures). Now, I am in a cast
for 2 months [note, it would be one month now], which is almost over!  YEAH!!
It is very hot and itchy.
----------
In other parts of the letter, she relates that she's had friends and family
visiting her, and she has done travelling around California and also Spain
(visited her grandmother), and yes, she went to Disney World.

Also, she says she will have another surgery (the second) at the end of the
year to remove the rod, and then she will return to gymnastics.  Meanwhile,
she has been doing light weights, treadmill, etc.  When the cast is off, she
will being swimming and perhaps light gymnastics (beam and floor dance work,
possibly).

Another quote:
----------
Until then I am keeping my spirits high, and enjoying my
"forced" vacation. This may have been a blessing disguise
(a very good one at that) because now I will get some rest
and be able to come back strong.
So,keep me in your thoughts because as Arnold says...
      "I'LL BE BACK!!"
----------

So anyways, that's how she is doing.

Rachele
