That's what they did for the 1991 Worlds in the Hoosier Dome in
Indianapolis. It appeared that the huge curtain draped across the
stadium bounded a seating area of about one third of the whole
stadium. The curtain was a backdrop for the scoreboard and the
media seating. The spectator seating was in the regular stadium seats,
including the upper deck.

The Hoosier Dome roof is not strictly opaque,
because it lets in some sunlight, but one cannot see the sky or things
outside. I didn't see the Super Bowl. Can one see the outdoors from
inside the Georgia Dome?

Also, to follow up on a thread from a few months ago, they mentioned that
the gymnastics events will be held in the Georgia Dome (where the
Superbowl is being held), not the Omni.  That will hopefully mean that
  tickets aren't impossible to get.

They seem to have vacillated on this over the last few months.  Today I
called up the ACOG (since "inquiring minds want to know..." ;^)  They
confirmed that artistic gymnastics will indeed be held in the Georgia
Dome and that the decision is *final*.  I guess the Omni was just too
small.  Don't know what they'll do about the initial objection; the
translucent ceiling.  They had mentioned that this would pose a distraction
to the gymnasts.

Rhythmic gymnastics will most likely be held at the Cobb County Galleria,
about 20 minutes north of downtown Atlanta.

I think the Georgia Dome seats around 70,000 for football.  That number
might increase if they put seats on the floor of the stadium for the
gymnastics.  But if they do the gymnastics like they do the basketball
games in huge indoor stadiums, and just have the competition in one
corner of the floor, that 70,000 would decrease.  And I wouldn't want to
sit at the top either, with the gymnasts being as tiny as they already
are.

I saw the Georgia Dome on the TV on Sunday (Yes we do get the
superbowl over here as well:), it certainly looked a very impressive
stadium. There must have been well over 100,000 people there. I
wouldn`t want to sit right at the back at the top though since you
won`t be able to see nout.

The did like showing that funny ceiling especially when the budweiser
blimp flew by, I imagine they will use a large sheet to cover the roof
up or something similar.

If the Georgia dome is just for the Gymnastics what on earth is the
athletics stadium like.

Wembley Stadium holds 80,000 obviously the Georgia Dome isn`t as big
as it looked.

Couldn`t really tell because of the lights and it being dark outside
but I would say it would be the same.

As far as I remember, Omelianchik (my all time FAVorite gymnast) was
the first to popularize it. I remember she received a 10.0 in event
finals at the 1985 worlds. Her pass wasn't acuallt that
difficult--double full punch front round off arabian handspring-front
handspring 1/2-(ff?)-1 1/2 twisting dive roll. Still, it looked
AWESOME. She also tumbled OUT of her opening and closing passes.
(full-ff. Full-in, ff, layout step-out).

My daughter did gymnastics at Desert Devils and Dynamo. In the few
years she competed we have seen some crazy parents! Comments like
<watching a 12 yo child crash from bars "I hope she breaks her neck!"
We are talking out loud in front of 10-12 other parents.> The
competition among parents is fierce. Most of the time it is not
verbal, but it is there. Let's put it this way when the 'Cheerleader'
hit man article came out in the Scottsdale paper Stormy Eaton promptly
cut it out and posted it on the bulletin board! Stormy has a wry sense
of humor and he thought it was hysterial but not unbelievable.

Hey Gymn,

Here's how the NCAA men look after the third week of competition.
Individual rankings are in following msg.

Women's rankings are compiled on Tuesday nights, so I'll post those on
Wednesday.

I will post the rankings to Gymn again in three or four weeks.
However, I do download the results every week... if you would like to
be added to my mailing list of rankings, just send me a note
specifying whether you want women's, men's, or both. If you already
subscribe, not to worry, I do have your name -- I just didn't send out
rankings this last week because of net problems.

Enjoy!

Rachele

Yes, a plain flair on beam is called a "Talavera"; a circles to flair mount
is a "Baitova."

I'm pretty sure Omelianchik's back-to-back pass went straight to RO 1
1/2-twisting dive roll (full-twisting arabian dive roll -- same thing) from
the RO arabian handspring; no front handspring 1/2 as Julius mentioned (or
ff).  Maybe not that difficult now, but pretty difficult then and definitely
a big departure from tradition and a very imaginative stroke.

Well, I was right... The coverage was almost exclusively on the
American girls (except for Chusovitna who they had to cover since she
won, and Gutsu, who American audiences would already know)

I didn't get to see Galieva or Onodie.  :(

Gutsu looks *MUCH* bigger. She's put on a few extra pounds, but also
seems to have a lot taller too. Onodie looked like she put on some
weight too...

It seems like Shannon figured out how to talk in front of the camera ;)

Wasn't Boginskaia supposed to be there too? Maybe Zmeskal and her both
thought the other would be there so they each came up with a reason
not to go. (just kidding)

That's all

Especially with Gutsu's story so indelibly ingrained from Barcelona...

Yes, we were disappointed in not seeing Onodi, who we also thought
would be a "known" quantity for US audiences; particularly since she
once considered coming to the US for college. Anyone know whether
anything ever came out of that?

>Gutsu looks *MUCH* bigger.  She's put on a few extra pounds, but also seems

Maybe...we thought it was the red outfit she wore for the beam routine that
(we felt) did NOTHING for her.  Actually, it was a becoming color, just an
unflattering cut.  Shades of Tonya Harding!

>It seems like Shannon figured out how to talk in front of the camera ;)

Actually, we thought Betty Okino did a pretty decent job with the
microphone - perhaps she'll follow Kathy Johnson and Wendy Hilliard as
an analyst one of these days...

On the whole, we found the coverage disappointing. It sure would've
been nice to have seen more of the men's competition, along with other
women (notably Onodi). Ken was particulary unhappy with the use of
costumes - he felt it took away from the gymnastics itself. Give it
time - this stuff is still pretty new and needs to find its way (that
is, if it's meant to be in the first place).

So, has anyone heard anything relating to Kim's absence from the show,
er competition? I have to wonder if she decided to avoid competing
with (and probably getting whipped by) active gymnasts. Crud. I
would've liked to see her three whips to double-back pass just ONCE
more...

Kim was working at the TOPS training camp last week-end. She told Sara
that she's working with Bela but only for 2 hours a day a couple days
a week. She's not doing any real training...just conditioning type
stuff.

The best Kovacs I ever saw was by Dan Hayden (ASU) years back (his
Kovacs was instrumental in their winning the NCAAs). I don't remember
what year it was (late 80's). Dan did his Kovacs semi-layed out, in
that he had no tuck, although his knees and arms were bent. All of the
people doing them today don't seem to go nearly as high.

Subject: Sunshine Cup

Hey everyone,

About a week ago Toby sent me the results from the Sunshine Cup so
that I could correct the names and then send it to Gymn. Of course I
have just now remembered to do this. Sorry! I've also included some of
Toby's comments. (Btw, Toby got to go to the *Bahamas* for this meet.
Of all the luck!)

25 Jan 1994, from Toby:

We got back from Bahamas tonight - it was WONDERFUL!!! Amanda Borden was
there - she did not place on any event or AA....and it wasn't like she had a
terrible meet either. Saw some really good gymnastics. Sara did OK. Found out
on Thursday that she has a stress fracture in her leg - so what else is new!

Vault:
1. 9.8 Lisa Gianni- North Stars (unbelievable! Front pike with half twist
  somewhere. It was beautiful)
2. 9.6 Samantha Muhleman - Cincinatti
3. 9.6 Martha Grubbs - Parkettes

Bars:
1. 9.825 Samantha M - Cinci
2. 9.8 Lisa Gianni - NS
3. ?? Jenny Beathard - Browns

Beam:
1. 9.575 Samantha M - Cinci
2. 9.475 Kristi Lichey  - Cinci
3. 9.45 Traci Sommers - North Stars (she's going to Utah next year)

Floor:
1. 9.575 Martha Grubbs - Parkettes
2. 9.55 Kara Fry - Parkettes
3. 9.55 Kristen Maloney - Parkettes

AA:
1. 38.125 Jenny Beathard - Browns
2. 38.075 Karin Lichey - Cinci
3. 37.85 Kara Fry - Parkettes
4. 37.8 Samantha M - Cinci
5. 37.8 Kristen Maloney - Parkettes

Team:
1. 114.175 Cincinatti
2. 113.875 Parkettes
3. 112.425 Browns
4. 110.575 North Stars
5. 109.525 Great Lakes

Some of the highlights:
Lisa's vault - she also did a beautiful double layout on floor. All her
tumbling
was excellent and she would have won floor had it not been for messing up a
simple double turn.

Amanda Borden - took huge steps on her vault; missed her double layout on
floor; her beam routine lacks difficulty. Her scores (V,Bar, Bm, FX) were
9.35, 9.675, 9.425, 9.2. She was given a lot because of her name, but it
wasn't enough to place her anywhere.

Kristin McDermott and Sarah Balogach had their first meets in over a year and
did OK. Each of them had a fall and scored 36.8 and 37.275 respectively.
Kristen Maloney had a GREAT meet - remember, she's only 12.

Great Lakes had some great bars.

The scoring was pretty fair for the most part. And you can see from the
scores that the was some pretty good gymnastics going on!! Next year the
meet's supposed to be held in Mexico and Jamaica - they'll b
meet between compulsories (L5-7) and Optionals because so many people want
to go - and who can blame them when you're leaving the weather we've been
having! I'm wondering if this'll become a new Buckeye.

Oh yeah, another tidbit - Steve Elliot is working for Cinci right now.

Subject: U of Illinois gymnasts

Well, we've had our fist couple of meets and it looks pretty rough for
our gymnasts. They have done well, all things considered. We've lost 3
people to injuries and have competed only 5 on UPB and FX. (We had to
count a 7.8 on UBP). The code is really hurting our bar workers. Two
of our top swingers are our with injuries and the remaining gymnasts
have the individual tricks but not the combinations. Oh well.

On a brighter note, the women competed quite well against Nebraska.
NE has some SCARY beam!  I was the timer and almost lost it when one
gymnast mounted with a roundoff LAYOUT mount immediate ff-layout stepout.
Yikes!  She scored 9.25 with a fall on a layout side sommi.  Beautiful
toe point and flexibility, too.

No scores, sorry.  I'll report them after our next meet.

Oh, Ronald--Lynn is doing fine and her gymnasts are in good shape.  The
team hasn't done "well", but is actually doing better than might be expected.

Some quick highlights from U of I:

Puni V. (Fr)  standing layout on beam.  True layout-pike double on floor.
(She is COMPELETELY in a stretch position the entire first salto)

Kelly H. (Fr) Cat double-double pirrouette (fx)

Natalie F. (So)  Giant full-ginger
                 giant 1/2-front 1/2-double tuck

Tracey (So WALKON!) jump 1 1/2 to Popa on BEAM (E+D)
      layout side
Rudi and front full on FX.  dances to Firebird

Nicole (Jr.) standing layout-ff-layout (BB), punch front, 3/4 straddle
(she'f from Miller's gym in OK()

Mary Beth  (Sr.) Cat-double-Popa-tuck 1/12 jump

We have a very talented, if highhly injured, team.  Our greatest fear now
is that should we not have a respectable season the program may be cut.
Men's gymnastics was on the list last year and our qualification to
Nationals may have won us a repreive.
