Subject: American Cup Prelim Results

The preliminary comp. of the McDonald's American Cup 4 March 1994 . . .

Women:
1- Dawes, Dominque USA
2- Piskoun, Elena BLR (.05 behind)
3- Pawkopaeava ULR
4- Loussoc, Eldoie (sp?) FRA (Jr. Euro Champ)

Men:
1- Rothlisberger, John USA

4-Wang Dong CHN & Sharipov, Rustam UKR

Shannon Miller was pulled from the meet with stomach trouble. Dawes missed a
Shaposhnikova on bars to score a 9.35. Dominque also took the highest score
of the meet with a 9.9 on beam. Amanda Borden had a disatrous vault scoring
only a 7.85. Also in finals . . . Qiau Ya CHN (showing a beautiful split leap
to immed. punch front on beam -- went 9.8; way too low), Andrea Molnar HUN, &
Anna Portuanda CUB.

Vitali Scherbo had major breaks on two events and labored through his pommel
horse and HB routine. He missed a whip immed. 1 and 1/2 to punch front on
floor and then went out of bounds on a side pass stag leap (mount layout
full-in & dismount double layout). He also touched down on hisYurchenko
double full vault. Vitali looks tired and overweight. Rustam Sharipov fell
on his third consecutive Tkatchev on HB. Also in finals . . . Zoltan Supola
HUN, Oliver Walther GER, & Marvin Campbell GBR.

Final note of interest . . . Natalia Kalinina recently won the Ukraine
National's beating favored team mates such as Lyssenko, Stobchatyaia,
Pawdkopayeva, and others. She plans to compete in the Brisbane World
Championships in April.

This was from memory so forgive me if there are any errors (though I think I
got it all right). Also please forgive my spelling!!

Subject: Bart and Nadia have their own TV show

I'm not sure if this has been mentioned or not, but Bart Conner and Nadia have
a cable TV show called "Food and Fitness". I was flipping through the stations
this morning at 6:00 trying to find some cartoons for my three year old
when I came across Bart giving gymnastics lessons to a bunch of 4 and 5 year
olds. We watched this for a while; my daughter is currently taking a Tumbling
Fun class and she knew a bunch of what Bart was teaching, like log rolls,
staddles, forward rolls, etc. Anways, after a commercial, there's Nadia and
Bart in the "kitchen" cooking salmon in some gross sauce.

The station is called TVFN; I've never heard of it before. As I said, the show
is on at 6AM at least in my area (Boston suburbs).

Subject: Gymnastics scoring vs. skating

I've often thought that skating (both free skating and ice dancing)
juding should be changed in several ways based on the way diving
and gymnastics are judged.
There should be a code of points/difficulty rating for moves,
classifying the various spins, jumps, elements of footwork(a very
important element often overlooked) and how they should be performed
in terms of height, speed and completion and resulting deductions.
For pairs and ice dancing, include lifts, synchronicty etc. The code
should also formally list the routine requirements to get a routine
of a certain point value.

1). Get rid of ordinals and factoring which makes political factions
much more influential in skating than they should be.

2) Give the referee judge the same power as the head judge has in
gymnastics(i.e. being able to force a judge that can't defend his
score to bring it in-line).

3) Move from a 6 point scale to a 10 point scale.

4) Retain the artistic scores but go to a straight point total,
giving both technical and artistic equal weight.

You'll notice that while there is not a code of points, professional
figure skating competitions are judged mostly along these lines,
because the skaters themselves have set up the competitions and
created the rules for judging.


5) Another consideration might be turning the technical or short
program into a compulsory program where everyone skates the same
routine. Ice dancing has this already with cumpulsory dances. The
danger here is that the routine would favor certain skating styles
over others.



I'm kinda hoping that Christopher Dean will really start to agitate
for changes in judging, particularly after seeing him and Jane
Torville on tv this morning talking about why they chose not to go to worlds(they feel that the judging has already been done). If the
coaches can be convinced that the changes will benefit their skaters,
they can pressure the skating associations to change.

According to friends who skated competitively, the politics in ice
skating is far worse than anything comparable I saw in gymnastics.
A friends sister, who was very good, dropped out because she got
tired of the stage moms, the dirty tricks(pop dumped in skating boots,
quarters run along skate blades, etc), and the politics. She still
loves skating and skates for her enjoyment but says there are some
serious changes that need to take place.

Subject: Skating/Gymnastics Judging

I'm really psyched about the comparative judging discussion because I think
about this stuff *all* the time.

More later, because I have a *ton* of schoolwork to catch up on, but I'd just
like to say that figure skating is my consolation -- whenever I get furious
and frustrated over gymnastics judging, I just watch a little figure skating
and indulge in the (somewhat perverse) pleasure of knowing there's people out
there who are *so* much worse than we are (of course, then I get mad at them
too, so it doesn't always help reduce stress). : )

One other quick thing -- subjectivity itself is for the most part not the
problem in these sports except at the highest level when there are two
athletes with different styles who are extremely close in level of
performance (like Nancy/Oksana). The real problem is that in allowing *room*
for subjectivity, politics storms in.
